So far, Don Sullivan has been nominated to run as President. No one else has volunteered at this time for this position. Ed Barrett has volunteered to run as Vice President and to date is unchallenged. Virginia Teker has volunteered to run for Treasurer. There have been no volunteers for the Secretarial position. If you are interested in running for any of these positions, please contact any one from the nominating committee before next month’s meeting.

CRUZIN’ THE HARBOR CAR SHOW COMMITTEE

A vote was taken of all members present as to whether the club would continue to have the CRUZIN’ THE HARBOR show. If any members present voted yes, they had to be willing to work the show. To vote, you had to be a member in good standing. Also, another vote taken, was in place of the car show our club would sponsor a rendezvous at Flowers Marine with the Twin City Idlers and the Corvette Club for a picnic and car display, public welcome.

HISTORICAL COMMITTEE

Harry Abbott the one man show, passed around the car club book again for members to get ideas for their info. on their rides. He was excited because he finally got a page to enter into the book. He also promised that if anyone new, gave him a page, he would put it in front of the book and not in the back with the dead guys! Wow, such a deal!

He then proceeded to display the things he brought back from his Alaska trip which consisted of, Mosquito catchers which looked suspiciously like mouse traps, and the $3000.00 T-shirt he donated to the raffle along with a Budweiser cooler from a car show.

Harry’s comments on his trip were:

ALASKA, nothin’ but miles and miles of nothin’ but miles and miles

Good news: mostly incredibly beautiful and always interesting.

Bad news: too many mozzies ( Mosquitos), too many bears, and too many Replublicans. I could probably live with the bears and mozzies.

More bad news: average price for gas on the trip was $5.11 a gallon and half of that was regular. Most I paid was $5.70.

Car shows: I managed to hit 5 shows during the trip. Poor Mary! Kalispell, Mont. 100+ cars, free camping, parade, poker run, free BBQ and breakfast. Very high dollar cars. Stained glass trophies made in Mexico. Anchorage, pre show at Mc Donalds, 70 cars, excellent choice in their selection of best unfinished. Jay Ofsthun Show, a bit rainy but 260 cars. 2 trophies, one a Corvair with a 455 Olds and the other, chosen by Dennis Gage, the My Classic Jerk guy, was a 58 Darrian sports car. The following weekend in Palmer, about 40 miles away, had 300 cars and ran from 5PM to 10 PM. On the way back just outside of Prince George in beautiful downtown Hixson, pop. 22, the 16 member car club put on a wonderful show, 100 cars and again had an excellent choice for the “best unfinished not done yet” class, plus gave a visiting Yank, the long distance plaque.

I still have mud, blood and moose poop under the truck, but now that I have replaced my beautiful but destroyed carbon fiber bed with diamond plate, I’m feeling better, but not good enough to go again… HARRY THE YANK

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE

“ Little Miss Sunshine” Darlene Hammond sent out three cards for August. A sympathy card was sent to Barb Holmes for the loss of her father. A sympathy card was sent to Bob McConchie for the loss of his mother. A get well card signed by the membership was sent to Bob Cairns ( past president) for a liver infection. As this will keep Bob and Randi out of the activities for a while, calls and cards would be appreciated.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Virginia Teker got a lot of mileage out of the misspelling of the new roster in the last newsletter. It said that Virginia had a new ROOSTER. Cock A Doodle Do!

She passed the new roster around for all of the members who were not present at the August meeting to make corrections on their information.

New member name tags were passed out to those present.

She then mentioned that because the data on members cars would no longer be listed on the roster, she could pass around a sheet to put the data on and it would be entered on the club software. Since most of the clubs members already have their car info. on the website it was decided not to do the sheet.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Lyla Lillis reported that the Friday Creek Campout on the Labor Day Weekend was a huge success. 40 people attended the potluck on Saturday which was for those camping and just visiting for the day.

The Sept. social was held on Sept.8, at Careage of Whidbey, a total care facility in Coupeville. Time was from 10:30 til 2:00. Twenty seven cars were present from our club. Congrats for the turnout from Don and Suzi Souza. Gourmet cuisine of chicken and salmon was served,” OOH LA LA”. Lyla has been watching too much of gardening with Ciscoe! A horseshoe tournament was held, winners competing for a $100.00 prize. Luckily the directors for Careage beat out Chuck Stone and Don Sullivan, the last remaining contenders.

Ribbons were awarded for the best cars, with 1st place going to the Crofts, 2nd to Gail and Chuck Jaeger, and 3rd to Rudy and Colleen Parhaniemi.

The OCTOBER SOCIAL will be held at Friday Creek Campgrounds on October 6th . There will be a campout on the four day weekend of the 5th thru the 8th. If you are interested, contact Alma Williams for reservations. If you can’t camp, come for the potluck on SAT. around 1:00 ish! Bring chairs and a dish to pass. You can come at your leisure or cruise from FLOWERS MARINE on the 6th at 11:00 with the pack.

CRUZ COMMITTEE

Don Sullivan the Guru held a meeting for all those attending the Lake Chelan Cruise after the general meeting to pass out information. Sadly, that did not include the trivia questions for the way over on the cruise. Wishful thinking. Lastly, there was a cancellation for the cruise and we were able to accommodate the Parhaniemi’s as an addition.

PUBLI AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

Jim Gleeson was not present at the meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

Scott Wernecke announced the Elk Lodge Sock Hop fundraiser on Friday November 9th, 2007. The cost is $8.00 per person which includes the basket dinner of hamburger and fries, and a root beer float, and admission to the dance. The dinner is 6:00 – 7:30PM,

With music from 7:30 – 11:00PM. Wear sock hop attire if you have it and prizes will be awarded for the best male and female costumes.

The Halloween Trick N Trunk at the Frontier Chevrolet Dealership on Pioneer in Oak Harbor will be held on October 31st. Dress up in costumes, decorate your trunk and be prepared to pass out a lot of candy.

Chuck and Gail Jaeger will throw a Halloween Potluck at their shop afterwards for everyone participating. You can drop your dish off ahead of time if you wish. Don’t miss this, it’s a hoot.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

It’s time. The Cruzers Christmas party is fast approaching. December 15th is the date and we have it on good authority that there will be no black out this year. What are the odds of this happening two years in a row!

The cost is $30.00 for a single and $60.00 per couple. As Gail Jaeger says, “ it is a bargain for the price.”

Cocktails will start at 5:30 PM, dinner at 6:30 PM, changing of the officers immediately following, entertainment at 8:00 PM and music by DJ with dancing afterwards.

Danny Vernon the best Elvis impersonator around will provide the entertainment.

Don’t forget to get your song requests into the DJ at eickhoffs@yahoo.com.

From the Front Seat

For those of you that attended our September meeting, it proved to be a historically significant meeting in that the future of our annual car show was decided by a vote of the membership. The final count was an overwhelming NO to continue the car show and an equally impressive YES vote to hold a “Whidbey Cruzer Rendezvous” in place of a car show.

The idea of a Rendezvous is to invite a couple of other car clubs to join us in a catered summer get together say at the Car Depot/Flowers Marine and maybe charge $5 a head for food and just have a good time. Some members asked if this would be something that would be open to the public and how would we control parking and access to food and security and liability. These are all good questions and would require a committee to be picked by next year’s officers to look into these questions and come up with a plan. I don’t think that it’s going to require as much time and effort as putting together a car show and less of a financial risk to the club.

The nominating committee for next year’s officers is hard at work and combing the membership for likely candidates for all positions. The October meeting will open the floor for any additional nominations. If you feel lead to offer your services to run for any of these positions, please contact any of the committee members which are Bruce Beamer, Judy Biddle, Fred Benninghoff or Vic Gabrenas.

The Whidbey Cruzers walked away with the lion’s share of the trophies at the North Whidbey Lions club Car Show in August with 16 Trophies and Best of Show going to our V.P. Jim Haddon and his 1946 Hudson P/U. Judy Biddle a.ka. “Ruby Judy” collected special awards from the Base Commander, Mayor’s award and Parts Plus for her freshly done 57 Thunderbird. Bruce was sweating buckets that he would win his class which meant that he would have to drive up to get his award and risk further the chances that the rear end would give out. After pulling the pumpkin it was found that there was numerous bolts and pieces wandering about which was quickly corrected. Can’t you just picture him being pushed to the winner’s circle or worse yet being towed by his Chevy P/U. “Please hold my cruzer jacket and someone give me a paper bag”

The Pizza Factory is going to be suffering a lack of attendance for Friday the 7th due to the Grand opening of the new High School Stadium and the kick off of a new season of Football from our State 4A Champs. There was standing room only and we won 35 to zip. Next Friday the 14th will see a drop in attendance since a large group of cruzers will be on this years “Cascade Loop” tour which from the last count will take 30 cars this year. Please pray for good weather for Sully in his 32 Roadster and the rest of us and NO breakdowns.

We have 117 members that are connected to the internet and E-Mail. Please check your E-Mail frequently and check our Web site calendar for up coming events. Got questions? Check the front page of our site and give the appropriate Chairperson a call.
