President Ed Hammond called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order at 7:00 PM at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge, November 6, 2007. 90 people were present. There were no additions or corrections to the previous minutes and they were accepted as published in the newsletter and on the website. All non-members of the Elks Club were reminded to sign in the guest book.

Dave Sweetwood was introduced as our newest member, having signed up at Trick N Trunk. His ride is a 1932 Ford V8 Sport Coupe. He also has a 58 Ford Studebaker which will probably be for sale. His wife Libbey, has an application in for new membership. Welcome.

Three visitors and prospective members attended the meeting. First was Greg Leathers, a Navy gentleman.

CRUZ COMMITTEE

Don "Sully" Sullivan reported on the success of the dinner cruise to the Flounder Bay restaurant on October 21, 2007. As usual, Sully took us on a scenic cruise via a route with some backroads. 54 people signed up for the dinner and 36 people showed up. Several of the non-attendee sign ups, had the courtesy to call and cancel.

Another dinner cruise will be planned for January to a terrific restaurant in Fairhaven. Stay Tuned!

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Virginia Teker passed out merit badges ( name tags) to the new members present. She also has a new " Rooster" out and you can download it off of your computer via email. If you can't get it on email, notify her and she will mail it to you.

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE

Little Miss Sunshine was not available to report as she was out cavorting around with her friends, but not until after she had criticized her husband on his attire for the meeting, which unfortunately Ed chose to wear anyway after her departure. He figured that if this was the last meeting he was going to preside over, he was going down in flames and that was precisely what he wore. So Big Mr. Sunshine reported that a card was sent to Bruce Biddle for his upcoming surgery. A card was also sent to Jim Smith for his hip surgery.

Get well cards and meals on wheels were sent to Judy Barnum for her back surgery and Don and Judy wished to thank everyone for the wonderful meals.

A card was sent to Chuck and Carol Stone for the loss of their daughter. They sent us a note thanking us for all our heartfelt thoughts.

At this time Ed also read a letter sent to him from Bob Cairns about Randi's health. Bob wanted to thank everyone for all of their help and support from the time that Randi was diagnosed until now in which she has deteriorated to the point that she will have to be put in a care facility shortly. She is now in the later stages of Alzheimer's and is unable to travel so she will no longer be able to participate in club activities. Bob will be staying home and caring for her as long as possible. He will be coming in for Cruzer activities when he can.

Last but not least, a card was sent to Mary Benninghoff for her knee replacement surgery which went very well.

CAR SHOW COMMITTEE

Ted Mann related that the only upcoming car show event in December and January was THE JINGLE BELL TOYS FOR TOTS at the XXX Drive In, Issaquah, WA on December 2nd.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Lyla Lillis noted that at least 25 cars from the Cruzers participated in the TRICK N TRUNK in Oak Harbor on Halloween with goblins of all sorts roaming around handing out treats to the kiddies. Thanks were given to the Jaegers for opening their shop to the participants to finish off the evening with a potluck in fine Cruzer style.

Thanks were also given to Ed Hammond the SLIDE SHOW GURU for his beautiful pictures he took of this festivity and put on the website.

November 9th, Friday night is the Sock Hop at the Elks Club in Oak Harbor. $8.00 a person includes Hamburger, Fries, Root Beer Float and admission to the dance. Prizes will be given out for best Sock Hop costumes. Dinner starts at 6:00PM and Sock Hop at 7:30.

November 22 is the Thanksgiving Harvest Fest also at the Oak Harbor Elks Club. They are looking from volunteers from the Cruzers to help deliver food and serve it to people at the club. They have 600 pounds of ham and 130 turkeys for this affair and expect to feed over 4500 people.

December 7 is the CRUZERS TOYS FOR TOTS at the Pizza Factory on Friday night. Sully did some checking and after contacting Tim Colantoni found a Marine contact who will be our new representative for Toys For Tots. Please bring a new unwrapped toy.

December 15 is the Cruzers Christmas party. See the highlight on it.

Sometime in December will be Fred and Mary Benninghoff"s Christmas Light Cruise. Check your email for date.

If anyone has an idea for a social in January or something for New Years eve, contact Lyla.

HYSTERICAL COMMITTEE

Harry Abbott gave the continuation and final chapter of The Bridge Logo Saga. The logo chairman reported that digitizing costs were going to be $400.00 and jackets were going to cost $230.00 a piece. Hard handed president Ray Payeur fined 16 members for not bringing their cars in January.

By February, the logo committee finally presented a color combination to the members. It was immediately rejected and sent back to the committee, possibly because it incorporated the color purple.

By March the guys had caught on and only $5.00 in car fines were brought in. In May the treasury was up to $600.00 and the Club finally voted to go to digitizers. By July the Club plaque was finished and was finally voted in. Ray's Poker Run came into being in August and Bruce Biddle applied for membership. At that time any member with concerns on a new member applicant could notify the Board within 15 days.

By September there was a new treasurer and the Club owed $240.00 to the members for a loan. By October the treasury was up another $5.00 but they still owed the $240.00 to the members. The Logo Committee was finally disbanded after only 17 months. Harry said that the Logo Chairman should have worked for the government. 14 cars went to the Snohomish car show where there were 400 some cars and no one from the club took a trophy.

Finally the Club paid the money back to the members that had loaned it to them. Ray was retired as president and the new president who had recently retired from his job as Logo Chairman, was Larry Smith.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

Jim Gleeson was not present for the meeting and there was nothing new to report.

OLD BUSINESS

Voting was done on the new Board members for 2008. As Donald (Sully) Sullivan ran unopposed he is the new President. Ted Mann won the vote for the new Vice President against Mike Harris. It was a close call. Joan Reeves ran unopposed for the Secretary and Virginia Teker running unopposed is the new Treasurer.

A letter of thanks was sent to the Club from the Oak Harbor Highschool for their work on renovating the Wildcat Van which they now call the "Cat Mobile". Thanks were given to all of the guys who worked on the van and to all of the women who provided food for them.

There was also a thank you letter from the Coupeville High School thanking the Club members who provided cars for the High School Homecoming, specifically Bruce Biddle, Rudy Parhaniemi, Ray Payeur and Jim and Linda Haddon.

NEW BUSINESS

There was no new business.

FROM THE FRONT SEAT

Ed Hammond was indisposed as he was vacationing in Arizona so I decided to step in and fill the front seat for him.

I knew that he would like to thank all of the people who worked under him this past year. Also he wanted to thank Mike Harris for his contributions to cruises along with Bob Cairns and Don Sullivan. He gave a special thanks to the indispensable Social Committee Chairperson, Lyla Lillis for her dedication to the job, and also to Ted Mann for his up to date commentaries on car shows. To Ray Oban for his dedication to his membership position and to Virginia Teker for taking over the membership position when Ray was no longer able to do it. He wanted to thank Harry Abbott who was the best ever Historical (Hysterical) Committee Chairperson for his witticisms. Lastly he gave special thanks to Jim Rairigh for his years of service in the treasurers position with great patience.

Sorry but I forgot to mention that he wanted to give a thank you to his wife Darlene for a job well done as the Sunshine Committee Chairperson.

Edwardo Hambone as he affectionately calls himself, has had a great second term as President of The Whidbey Cruzers and is now relinquishing the position with regrets. He will however continue to be very active in the Clubs activities and hopefully be the new Photographic Committee Chairperson.

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday January 8, 2007 at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge. No meeting will be held in December and the newsletter includes information for both December and January.

FROM YOUR SECRETARY

I would like to thank all of you who have supported me this past year. I have had a lot of fun composing the newsletter. I couldn't have done it without the great team I had to work with. I was especially lucky to have the great president Edwardo Hambone to work under. This year has seen many new members who have immediately joined in the Club's activities. This was a very welcome sign that hopefully we are doing something right. Also this year there was more Club participation in Community activities.

I am proud to have served this year and pass the position on to Joan Reeves who has much experience in this position and whom I learned the job from.

Jack Stiltz however, was present. There were no corrections or additions to the previous minutes and they were accepted as published in the news letter and on the website. Non members of the Elks Lodge were reminded to sign the guest book.

NEW MEMBERS

Ed Hammond announced that Dean Lohman had been voted on and was accepted as our newest member. Dean said that she could finally join the club as Larry had bought her a 1972 Chevy 454 custom truck in a very pretty red color.

CAR FINES

As this was the first month of no car fines for not driving your ride to the meeting until next April many members felt safe to bring other means of transportation.

CRUZ COMMITTEE

The cruz guru Don "Sully" Sullivan, gave a report on the success of the Lake Chelan Loop Loop cruise on September 14,15,16, 2007. 31 cars and a Peterbuilt with trailer attended the cruise and met up with two motor homes of people in Chelan. Everything went pretty well with the staggered 3 groups of cars until leaving Winthrop when Ron and Virginia Teker driving their Chevy Blazer had their motor quit and had to be towed home to Oak Harbor. They were the only "permanent casualty". There were two other minor mishaps, one was the car at the top of Washington Pass that stopped and the driver thought that maybe he could start it by putting it in neutral. Since he had no shift indicator, he stuck it in reverse and it locked up and went sliding down the Pass. For that mishap, Don Souza won the Rubber Chicken Award at the parking lot party. He has already warned people that he will be passing it on the next chance he gets.

The other mishap took place in Campbells restaurant parking lot when Don Sully Sullivan took his bride to dinner for their anniversary. He stopped the roadster in front of the door to let her out and couldn't get it started again. He managed to get Rock Star parking for twenty minutes with that excuse.

The parking lot "Hillbilly" theme party was a gas. All of the costumes were excellent but Lyla Lillis was the absolute best. Archie came as himself as did Sully Sullivan. There was even entertainment provided by Gail Stultz and Mary Benninghoff in the form of a Hillbilly ode to the Bobbitts.

Probably no need to mention that the parking lot feast was taken very seriously and there was such an abundance of food that it took 9 room tables to accommodate all of it.

The first prize winners for the Trivia contest on the way over were Jim and Carole Croft while Ray and Flo Payeur took second. Lots of phone calls were made to friends and even some computer work was done to get answers to the questions. LaDonna Nickels however, spent her ride over doing Sudoku.

Saturday was a free day and some people went for boat and sea plane rides on the Lake. Most everyone went for sumptuous dining at Campbells that night. Sunday morning a small group left early and went home the way they had come over, hoping that they could get the trivia answers right on the second try.

The rest of the group went on to Leavenworth where some time was allotted for Shopping and then on to the 59er Diner where they treated us like royalty and closed the restaurant to other patrons. We dined on real, old fashioned drive in food that I recalled from my youth.

After we left the diner it started to pour and the rest of the ride home was bleak in the rain.

Thanks were given to Jimmy Flowers and Bruce Biddle for their adept leadership to their groups.

Don Sullivan sent a sign up sheet around for a dinner cruise to the FLOUNDER BAY restaurant in Anacortes on October 21, 2007 and 35 people signed up for it. We will be leaving from Flowers Marine on Sunday around 4:15 PM. Make sure that you have a full tank of gas.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Virginia Teker said that Ed had stolen her thunder by announcing Dean Lohman as our newest member. She had several "merit badges" as she called the name tags, to give out.

In a side note, she mentioned that after the humiliating experience of having to get towed home from Winthrop, they had purchased a new car the next day. The Chrysler Pacifica is now the first car they own made in this century.

Virginia Teker has a new email address so please make the change on your "Rooster".

Blueivories88@yahoo.com is the new email address where you can contact her if you have any new info., or want copies of the "Rooster" mailed to you. She will put out a new "Rooster" about every three months.

CAR SHOW COMMITTEE

Ted Mann was short and to the point sweet tonight with only 0ne car show for November within spitting distance.

UPCOMING EVENTS IN NOVEMBER

17 Elite Project Santa Claus Show, Bellingham, WA

HISTORICAL COMMITTEE

Harry Abbott, better known as "Harriett" because of the ladies long black wig that he donned to become the Bucket Dudette, had composed a story he called the "Bridge Logo Saga" from the club's first years meeting minutes. At that time Ray Payeur was president and Gail Stultz was historian and secretary. Craig Maxwell started the trouble when he suggested that the Deception Pass Bridge be used for the club logo.

At the 3rd meeting 3 new people were applying for membership, Jim and Carole Croft and Don Sullivan. By the 5th meeting there were 29 members and the treasury stood at $376.00

A surprise cruise was held where everyone showed up not knowing where they were going, but came with a full tank of gas in anticipation.

By the 8th meeting, Ray Payeur dubbed as "the hard core president", had found 12 new people for membership.

At the end of the first year, the club had a total of 39 members and $452.04 in the treasury.

The nominated logo chairperson had finished designing the bridge logo, except for the color, which turned out to be a problem because that person wanted the color purple!

Tune in next month for the continuing saga of "The Bridge Logo".

Harry then went on to give out awards for the Lake Chelan Cruise participants, who had endured the most hardships. The "Red Roadster Award" went to Vicki Sullivan, hopefully to resurrect her hair, after being the only woman going the longest distance in an open top car. The "Iron Man Award" for suffering beyond the call of duty went to Jim Rairigh who was literally water logged after his ride home in the rain. He was warned that he would end up with rusty vents if that continued. The last award went to Don Sullivan in the form of a windshield wiper blade, for putting up with his wife's ongoing repertoire on the comforts of his car, hopefully to remind him that if he takes her on another ride like that, she will tell him where to put it.

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE

As "Little Miss Sunshine", Darlene Hammond had nothing to report, "Big Mr. Sunshine" Ed Hammond, took the spotlight reporting that he had contacted Bob Cairns who is at home suffering from a liver infection. Bob has planned on coming to some of the recent club activities but has been unable to because of Randi's health. It was proposed by Jimmy Flowers that the club do a cruise to Bob's neighborhood so that he and Randi didn't have to come here for a change. Bruce Biddle suggested a Pot Luck at the Senior Center next door to Bob's. Several people offered to be instrumental in setting that up.

Judy Barnum had gone into the hospital in late September for back surgery and was back home convalescing. The procedure appears to have been successful however she may be out of action for three months. Phone calls and cards would be appreciated.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Lyla Lillis was not able to be present so Alma Williams filled in for her.

October 5-8 is the Friday Creek Campout, arriving on Friday and departing on Monday. 5 couples have signed up already. For those not camping there will be a potluck on Sat. the 6th at around 2:00PM. They have the use of the clubhouse if it rains.

OCTOBER 21 is the Flounder Bay Dinner Cruise. $11.00 early bird special with many choices and live music. Leaves Flowers Marine at 4:15 PM. 35 people have signed up so far.

OCTOBER 31 is Trick N Trunk in front of Frontier Chevrolet Oak Harbor starting at 4:00 PM and ending around 7:00 PM. Wearing costumes and decorating your car trunks would be appreciated along with the tons of candy you will be handing out. Afterwards there will be a Potluck Party for those who participated in the Trick N Trunk, at Chuck and Gail Jaeger's shop. You can drop off your dish before if you wish.

NOVEMBER 9 is the Sock Hop at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge. Dinner is 6:00 pm – 7:30 PM with music and dancing 7:30 – 11:00 PM. The $8.00 fee includes: burger fries, root beer float and admission to the dance. If you have sock hop clothes, dress accordingly.

NOVEMBER 22 is The Community Harvest Celebration Thanksgiving Dinner at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge from 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM

PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

There were no new affairs to discuss as Jim Gleeson was unable to be present.

OLD BUSINESS

Nominations were opened to the floor for the 2008 club officers. So far the nominates are:

President Don Sullivan

Vice President Mike Harris

Ted Mann

Secretary Joan Reeves

Treasurer Virginia Teker

There were no new nominations. The voting for Vice President will take place at the Nov. meeting and you must be present to vote.

NEW BUSINESS

Ed Hammond received an email from at Oak Harbor high school who teaches video and broadcast communications. The students "Wild Cat TV" group that covered the 2007 Cruzin' The Harbor Car Show, now has the DVD available as seen on channel 21 for $21.95. Many of our club members are interviewed in it and it is a tribute to our club.

Also Chris wondered if we could suggest someplace to get the "WILD CAT" van painted purple and their logo put on in gold at a possible discounted price. The single word ( PURPLE) spurred Larry Smith into action, and along with Ed Hammond thought this would be nice to do for the students at the Oak Harbor High School.

Larry asked for volunteers from the club to overhaul the van and paint it (purple), of which he said he had plenty of color of paint. He figured that the rest of supplies would cost around $200.00 including the graphics for Wildcat TV and the Whidbey Cruzers Logo. It was motioned and voted on by the club members present to donate up to $500.00 for this project. Watch your emails as work will begin this weekend.

WEBSITE

If you have gone to the website lately and haven't been able to get in, it was because Ed Jr. accidentally failed to renew our Web Domain. It has since been taken care of and renewed for 3 years and should be back up and running smoothly within a week.

Be sure to check out the photo shows done by Ed Hammond Sr. from the Lake Chelan cruise and the progress of the Wild Cat TV van project.

GOOD OF THE ORDER

Jack Stiltz was present to remind everyone of the upcoming charitable event on November 22, 2007 where Thanksgiving dinner is cooked, served and delivered to any one who asks in our community. This takes place at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge from 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM. As in the past, Jack was asking for volunteers from our club to help serve and deliver meals as well as transport people to and from the Lodge for their meal. I can't think of a better way to spend Thanksgiving than this. Jack Stiltz or Lyla Lillis will pass a sign up sheet for volunteers next meeting. Over 4400 people were provided dinner last year.

A vote was taken of all members present as to whether the club would continue to have the CRUZIN’ THE HARBOR show. If any members present voted yes, they had to be willing to work the show. To vote, you had to be a member in good standing. Also, another vote taken, was in place of the car show our club would sponsor a rendezvous at Flowers Marine with the Twin City Idlers and the Corvette Club for a picnic and car display, public welcome.

HISTORICAL COMMITTEE

Harry Abbott the one man show, passed around the car club book again for members to get ideas for their info. on their rides. He was excited because he finally got a page to enter into the book. He also promised that if anyone new, gave him a page, he would put it in front of the book and not in the back with the dead guys! Wow, such a deal!

He then proceeded to display the things he brought back from his Alaska trip which consisted of, Mosquito catchers which looked suspiciously like mouse traps, and the $3000.00 T-shirt he donated to the raffle along with a Budweiser cooler from a car show.

Harry’s comments on his trip were:

ALASKA, nothin’ but miles and miles of nothin’ but miles and miles

Good news: mostly incredibly beautiful and always interesting.

Bad news: too many mozzies ( Mosquitos), too many bears, and too many Replublicans. I could probably live with the bears and mozzies.

More bad news: average price for gas on the trip was $5.11 a gallon and half of that was regular. Most I paid was $5.70.

Car shows: I managed to hit 5 shows during the trip. Poor Mary! Kalispell, Mont. 100+ cars, free camping, parade, poker run, free BBQ and breakfast. Very high dollar cars. Stained glass trophies made in Mexico. Anchorage, pre show at Mc Donalds, 70 cars, excellent choice in their selection of best unfinished. Jay Ofsthun Show, a bit rainy but 260 cars. 2 trophies, one a Corvair with a 455 Olds and the other, chosen by Dennis Gage, the My Classic Jerk guy, was a 58 Darrian sports car. The following weekend in Palmer, about 40 miles away, had 300 cars and ran from 5PM to 10 PM. On the way back just outside of Prince George in beautiful downtown Hixson, pop. 22, the 16 member car club put on a wonderful show, 100 cars and again had an excellent choice for the “best unfinished not done yet” class, plus gave a visiting Yank, the long distance plaque.

I still have mud, blood and moose poop under the truck, but now that I have replaced my beautiful but destroyed carbon fiber bed with diamond plate, I’m feeling better, but not good enough to go again… HARRY THE YANK

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE

“ Little Miss Sunshine” Darlene Hammond sent out three cards for August. A sympathy card was sent to Barb Holmes for the loss of her father. A sympathy card was sent to Bob McConchie for the loss of his mother. A get well card signed by the membership was sent to Bob Cairns ( past president) for a liver infection. As this will keep Bob and Randi out of the activities for a while, calls and cards would be appreciated.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

Virginia Teker got a lot of mileage out of the misspelling of the new roster in the last newsletter. It said that Virginia had a new ROOSTER. Cock A Doodle Do!

She passed the new roster around for all of the members who were not present at the August meeting to make corrections on their information.

New member name tags were passed out to those present.

She then mentioned that because the data on members cars would no longer be listed on the roster, she could pass around a sheet to put the data on and it would be entered on the club software. Since most of the clubs members already have their car info. on the website it was decided not to do the sheet.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Lyla Lillis reported that the Friday Creek Campout on the Labor Day Weekend was a huge success. 40 people attended the potluck on Saturday which was for those camping and just visiting for the day.

The Sept. social was held on Sept.8, at Careage of Whidbey, a total care facility in Coupeville. Time was from 10:30 til 2:00. Twenty seven cars were present from our club. Congrats for the turnout from Don and Suzi Souza. Gourmet cuisine of chicken and salmon was served,” OOH LA LA”. Lyla has been watching too much of gardening with Ciscoe! A horseshoe tournament was held, winners competing for a $100.00 prize. Luckily the directors for Careage beat out Chuck Stone and Don Sullivan, the last remaining contenders.

Ribbons were awarded for the best cars, with 1st place going to the Crofts, 2nd to Gail and Chuck Jaeger, and 3rd to Rudy and Colleen Parhaniemi.

The OCTOBER SOCIAL will be held at Friday Creek Campgrounds on October 6th . There will be a campout on the four day weekend of the 5th thru the 8th. If you are interested, contact Alma Williams for reservations. If you can’t camp, come for the potluck on SAT. around 1:00 ish! Bring chairs and a dish to pass. You can come at your leisure or cruise from FLOWERS MARINE on the 6th at 11:00 with the pack.

CRUZ COMMITTEE

Don Sullivan the Guru held a meeting for all those attending the Lake Chelan Cruise after the general meeting to pass out information. Sadly, that did not include the trivia questions for the way over on the cruise. Wishful thinking. Lastly, there was a cancellation for the cruise and we were able to accommodate the Parhaniemi’s as an addition.

PUBLI AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

Jim Gleeson was not present at the meeting.

NEW BUSINESS

Scott Wernecke announced the Elk Lodge Sock Hop fundraiser on Friday November 9th, 2007. The cost is $8.00 per person which includes the basket dinner of hamburger and fries, and a root beer float, and admission to the dance. The dinner is 6:00 – 7:30PM,

With music from 7:30 – 11:00PM. Wear sock hop attire if you have it and prizes will be awarded for the best male and female costumes.

The Halloween Trick N Trunk at the Frontier Chevrolet Dealership on Pioneer in Oak Harbor will be held on October 31st. Dress up in costumes, decorate your trunk and be prepared to pass out a lot of candy.

Chuck and Gail Jaeger will throw a Halloween Potluck at their shop afterwards for everyone participating. You can drop your dish off ahead of time if you wish. Don’t miss this, it’s a hoot.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

It’s time. The Cruzers Christmas party is fast approaching. December 15th is the date and we have it on good authority that there will be no black out this year. What are the odds of this happening two years in a row!

The cost is $30.00 for a single and $60.00 per couple. As Gail Jaeger says, “ it is a bargain for the price.”

Cocktails will start at 5:30 PM, dinner at 6:30 PM, changing of the officers immediately following, entertainment at 8:00 PM and music by DJ with dancing afterwards.

Danny Vernon the best Elvis impersonator around will provide the entertainment.

Don’t forget to get your song requests into the DJ at eickhoffs@yahoo.com.

From the Front Seat

For those of you that attended our September meeting, it proved to be a historically significant meeting in that the future of our annual car show was decided by a vote of the membership. The final count was an overwhelming NO to continue the car show and an equally impressive YES vote to hold a “Whidbey Cruzer Rendezvous” in place of a car show.

The idea of a Rendezvous is to invite a couple of other car clubs to join us in a catered summer get together say at the Car Depot/Flowers Marine and maybe charge $5 a head for food and just have a good time. Some members asked if this would be something that would be open to the public and how would we control parking and access to food and security and liability. These are all good questions and would require a committee to be picked by next year’s officers to look into these questions and come up with a plan. I don’t think that it’s going to require as much time and effort as putting together a car show and less of a financial risk to the club.

The nominating committee for next year’s officers is hard at work and combing the membership for likely candidates for all positions. The October meeting will open the floor for any additional nominations. If you feel lead to offer your services to run for any of these positions, please contact any of the committee members which are Bruce Beamer, Judy Biddle, Fred Benninghoff or Vic Gabrenas.

The Whidbey Cruzers walked away with the lion’s share of the trophies at the North Whidbey Lions club Car Show in August with 16 Trophies and Best of Show going to our V.P. Jim Haddon and his 1946 Hudson P/U. Judy Biddle a.ka. “Ruby Judy” collected special awards from the Base Commander, Mayor’s award and Parts Plus for her freshly done 57 Thunderbird. Bruce was sweating buckets that he would win his class which meant that he would have to drive up to get his award and risk further the chances that the rear end would give out. After pulling the pumpkin it was found that there was numerous bolts and pieces wandering about which was quickly corrected. Can’t you just picture him being pushed to the winner’s circle or worse yet being towed by his Chevy P/U. “Please hold my cruzer jacket and someone give me a paper bag”

The Pizza Factory is going to be suffering a lack of attendance for Friday the 7th due to the Grand opening of the new High School Stadium and the kick off of a new season of Football from our State 4A Champs. There was standing room only and we won 35 to zip. Next Friday the 14th will see a drop in attendance since a large group of cruzers will be on this years “Cascade Loop” tour which from the last count will take 30 cars this year. Please pray for good weather for Sully in his 32 Roadster and the rest of us and NO breakdowns.

We have 117 members that are connected to the internet and E-Mail. Please check your E-Mail frequently and check our Web site calendar for up coming events. Got questions? Check the front page of our site and give the appropriate Chairperson a call.

Whidbey Cruzers SHOP TALK

August 7, 2007 "CRUZIN' The Millennium" VOL. 11-8

President Ed Hammond called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order at 7:00 PM at Windjammer Park on Aug. 7, 2007. . The meeting was held there as it was Oak Harbor's night out to fight crime. A desert potluck started at 6:00PM and everything was delectable. It was impossible to make a head count so it will suffice to say that a gaggle of members were present as they were very vociferous. The previous minutes were amended as follows: Colleen Parhaniemi was approved by the board as a new member. A warm welcome to the club, Colleen, and we are sorry for the omitance in the newsletter last month.

NEW MEMBERS

Five new members were approved by the board for this month. Now we are really on a roll. Maurice Elder, who is in the Navy, has a collection of Ford Mustangs which include a 1992, 1995, and a 2003. I'm sure that someone in the club will be able to help him find an earlier model to add to his collection. Bruce and Gayle Forbes, from Langley, were both welcomed as members. They are retired and drive a 1957 Ford Thunderbird. Lastly Mel and Deanna Rogers were approved from Coupeville. They are both retired and drive a 1972 Austin Mini Cooper. A very warm welcome to all of you!

CAR FINES

These were at a slow roll as it seemed everyone wanted to show off their rides at Windjammer Park. They all got a lot of attention. Kudos for those brave enough to take their rides as the weather was threatening.

MEMBERSHIPS

Virginia Tecker

Dues should be mailed to: Whidbey Cruzers, PO Box 1875, Oak Harbor, WA 98277.

Virgina was in rare form-storming along with lots of new and innovative ideas to spice up her chairpersonship. A new form to welcome and inform members was introduced as was a buddy system for new members. Also she has done a new rooster up to date as of Aug. 2007 in a spread sheet format. It was sent out to all of the members via e-mail. Please print it up and if you can not access it via e-mail there will be some copies available at the next meeting. There were 161 paid members. Name tags for new members are free. A cost of $2.50 for non member's nametags is applicable. If you wish to purchase a dash plaque the cost is $18.00. Virginia then said that she was having a senior moment as she had new nametags to pass out. She asked everyone to check their info on the new rooster and let her know if anything was incorrect especially under the current spouse section. FYI-40 of our members are wives or "women"! The rooster may not be glamorous but it is the only thing that all of the club members have in common, so please keep it up to date with your info!

CRUZ COMMITTEE

Don Sullivan

Sully Sullivan the Cruz Guru of etiquette announced that there were 28 couples signed up for the Chelan "Loop" Cruz September 14-15-16. Two other couples are meeting us there. The newest additions were Larry/Dean Lohman and Jerry/Marianne Rolf. An information packet will be passed out to all those participants at the conclusion of the September meeting. Since there are such a large number of cars, he will be dividing the "Rides" into 3 groups. Sully, Bruce Biddle and Jimmy Flowers will each lead a group. He is doing this to make traveling more manageable. The route and stops will all be the same but just staggered a little in time. He would like a list of cell numbers available just for this trip and don't forget your phone. The main mode of communications will be the small hand held Walkie Talkie's . If you have more than one, bring it for a Cruzer that may not own one. Don't forget fresh batteries!

The meeting and departure time will be announced at the September meeting. Departure point is Flowers Marine. There will be several stops going and returning from Chelan.

The "Parking lot Party" at the Midtowner Motel will have a Hillbilly theme so dress accordingly. The get together usually has snacks and beverages of your choice which you can bring with, or stop to load up at one of the local stores. Saturday is a free day.

Cambles Resort has a nice restaurant with outdoor balcony dining and is located within walking distance of the motel. If enough people desire to go there I will call before the trip and give a rough head count. This is not a one big table event but rather a number of 4 to 6 people tables. This is the cruze of the year. Looking forward to getting acquainted with all the new cruzers. Plan on spending a little time after the Sept. meeting to get all the information and answer questions. Yahoo!

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE

Darlene Hammond

Little Miss Sunshine Darlene Hammond was pleased to announce that there was only 1 get well card sent out this month. That was to Neil Berger for a hospitalization and thankfully that was a false alarm.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Lyla Lillis

Lyla wanted to remind everyone of the plethora of Dinner cruzes, potlucks, car shows, celebrations of birthdays and anniversarys. We celebrate them all, please be a part of it! There is no Tuesday night social in September.

The Friday Creek campout is Aug 31st thru Sept 2nd. A potluck will be held for those not camping on Sept. 1st at 1:00 PM who wish to join the festivities for the day.

There are 2 Poker Fund Raisers set for Aug. 1st and Aug 18th leaving from Skagit Harley. If interested contact rchistnelson@comcast.net

Finally the Careage of Whidbey Car Show on Sept. 8th from 11:00 to 2:00. They will have a barbecue for us and 1st thru 3rd place ribbons for our cars chosen by the residents. Please support this as Don and Suzi Souza have supported all of our other causes. Careage of Whidbey is an assisted living facility and the residents are very happy to have outside communication. Our rides are their way of expressing their youth. Please come and celebrate!

The Stones, wanted to report that the club's annual outing at Jacks Park on July 8th was a rousing success. A horseshoe tournament and a miniature golf tournament were held simultaneously. The winners of the horseshoes were Jerry Rolf and Chuck Stone. 2nd place were Don Sullivan and Lynn Holmes while 3rd place went to Ron Teker and Duane Dillard. In the miniature golf the big winner was Fred Benninghoff, 2nd place Carol Stone and 3rd place Byron Baxley. The grossest score was won by Vicki Sullivan. A big thanks to Archie Lillis who brought all the fresh crab for the crowd to gorge themselves on.

CRUZ'N THE HARBOR CAR SHOW

On 25 July 12 people attended an open discussion as to whether to have or not have a car show in 2008. Founder Larry Smith was present. There was an open discussion that lasted approximately one and one half hours. The discussion came up with the following and recommended that this be voted on at the September meeting.

2008 CRUZ'N THE HARBOR CAR SHOW

                YES                    NO

  • ***************************

*             * *

There will be a 2008 car show ALTERNATIVE NO

and you automatically volunteer * ALTERNATIVE

to work on a committee. *

*

        A club rendezvous held at

a date determined by members

and catered.

A vote would be either YES or NO. If you voted YES it means that you will volunteer to work prior to and during the car show on a committee. This is a big commitment and people tend to say yes and then find it hard to keep that commitment.

If you vote NO there is no car show and no work. Then after voting No there will be another vote to determine if you want an alternative to the car show or no alternative. If you vote yes for an alternative it would be a catered function to be determined by members. If you are confused or have questions call Sully and he will help make you more confused.
