Shop Talk – August 2008

President Don (Sully) Sullivan called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order 7:00 p.m. at the Oak Harbor Windjammer Park, August 5, 2008. There were approximately 64 in attendance. Previous minutes were approved as published in newsletter.

This was a very relaxed meeting. Sully and Joan were the only officers on board. Those that came showed off their cars and enjoyed the beautiful day and evening. There were no guests or new members introduced. We also did not have any drawings this evening but there were plenty of delicious desserts for everyone to share and have a bite. The park was celebrating the NATIONAL NIGHT OUT which emphasizes an effort to fight crime. There were lots of information booths about things to get involved in and FOOD/BEVERAGE BOOTHS for everyone's pleasure and delight (for a price).

PAST HAPPENING'S IN REVIEW

Sully asked for a brief summary of past car show and happening events, they are as follows:

Ed told us about the 4th of July Parade and our participation which was very favorably received by parade onlookers. Jim Croft had a little car trouble with his 34 Ford and a couple of dropouts.

Harry reported on the July 26, Rendezvous and asked if we wanted to do it again, we said yes with him in charge. Larry Smith's tricycle races were a success even if one or two needed repair during the ordeal. The root beer floats were a hit and the burgers were goooood! The trophies were very unique and participants really enjoyed the thought and ingenuity that went into them. I think there were about 76 – 80 cars on display. He thanked everyone for their hard work and letters went out to Flowers and the Car Depot and the Net Drive-In.

The Motor City car show in Mount Vernon was small only 9 cars showed so Herb Terrill took BEST of SHOW.

Website

Ed Hammond mentioned to everyone to check out the photos of the Rendezvous.

NEW BUSINESS:

Officer Elections – It's that time again to consider next year's Board. Sully told everyone that election of new officers was coming up and think of whom you would like to lead us in 2009. Nominations should take place in October and voting in November for a new President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Membership Chair.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

Bruce Biddle reported about the Cruzers who helped the PBY Memorial Museum Association move from the tiny gas station on Pioneer to Bldg. 12 on the Seaplane base. They spent a good 3 hours doing everything asked of them and ate a lot of doughnuts.

Lyla Lillis told us that they have the new larger speed bumps in their drive now so no one drags/hits bottom.

Tim Colantoni sent a beautiful shadow box with a certificate and U.S. flag that was flown over IRAQ in a combat mission. It was sent and is dedicated to the Whidbey Cruzers for our support of the troops. It will be displayed at Flowers Marine. Tim will be here, in Oak Harbor, at end of this month.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:DID YOU KNOW: USA TODAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2001

Volkswagen Passat W8: Volkswagen is launching a $37,000 version of its Passat sedan. It will have an 8-cylinder engine and a touch of wood and leather that comes standard. Concept D1: This sedan is expected to launch next year in Europe and 2003 in the USA. It will be priced at about $75,000.

DID THE ABOVE REALLY HAPPEN?

Another Piece of Trivia, Ford's First Vehicle: Ford's interest in internal combustion engines led him to construct a small one-cylinder gasoline model which sputtered its way to life on his kitchen table. A later version of that engine powered his Quadricycle, which was a frame fitted with four bicycle wheels, completed in June 1896. He built his Quadricycle in a brick shed behind his house. When the car was ready to run, he discovered it was too wide to go through the door of the shed. He was so excited to get his car out for a test run he took an axe and smashed the bricks out of the wall.
