VP MINUTE

Call 911

Something really cool happened the other day.

Most of you Cruzer persons remember the tale of the pizza lady and the six cop cars with all their dog smellin', plaster footprint police equipment, not to mention the glossy 8X10 photos with circles and arrows on the back describing what each one was and the crime and to be used as evidence against her.

Oh! The cool thing? The cool thing was that a kid put a big ding in my hood. So, how is that cool, you might ask? A fair question what with my seemingly affection for notifying the constabulary. I was at my truck club show at the Nile. All host trucks are parked to the side and one of the members staked out the club's sign in front of my truck. Earlier I had parked a father and his 16 year old son in a beautiful pro-street Nova in a safe place as they couldn't stay. The kid got so excited over my motor (man, I wish it got women that worked up) that he tripped over a guy wire and the sign fell and bounced off my hood.

I can't help but wonder what I would have done at that age. Did the kid do a runner? No, he went and got his dad and brought him back to show him what happened. Then they sent for me. Both were sincerely upset. I was more depressed than upset until I talked to them for a bit. Dad offered to make it right and has already sent a nice card and a check. He's a single dad and is a simple working bloke.

One of my mom's favorite sayings was "the world is going to hell in a hand basket" and I sometimes agree. Last week two kids took off their clothes on an I-5 overpass and threw rocks, hitting 14 cars. Reason: they were bored. You really have to wonder what ever happened to intelligence and old fashion responsibility. When my dad shook hands with someone, it was an unwritten contract. I'll bet your parents were the same.

There were three lucky people at that car show. One was Cliff who has a dad who stands by him and had taught him moral responsibility. The second was his dad, who has a son any parent would be proud of. And the third was me for getting to meet them. That was worth any ding. OK, small ding.

Now, if we can only get that pizza lady back from Missouri…….

CRUZ'N WITH THE PREZ!

As I watch the great car manufacturers struggle I don't know if I can deal with an Automotive Landscape that does not include Chrysler and General Motors. I grew up with the Big 3,that includes Ford. In my lifetime I saw the demise of the Hudson, Packard, Studebaker, Kaiser, Nash and other ideas like the DeLoreon but the constant was always the big three, that is where the automotive innovations began and ended. American cars sound different, throaty, raw and powerful. The look is unique and very identifiable creating a devotion to and an unshakable love for your Ford, Chevy or Dodge. We truly were lucky to grow up in the golden age of the automobile and even as we let ourselves succumb to the Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans of today we all know where our hearts really lie.

I have a Ford Truck and a Classic 1955 Ford yet my wife's daily driver is a Nissan Altima and mine is a 1983 Datsun 280ZX. But believe me I am now and always will be a Ford Guy.

For the good of us all lets hope the American Auto Industry recovers as strong and innovative as we once new it to be.
