Shop Talk – July 2008

President Don (Sully) Sullivan called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order 7:03 p.m. at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge on July 1, 2008. There were approximately 81 in attendance. Previous minutes were approved as published in newsletter.

Guests

Harry Abbott introduced Ron Foster who has a Ford F-100 Panel wagon. Archie Lillis introduced Frank Martinez (just met) visiting us, who's a QA Flight Inspector at NAS Whidbey and will be here until August. He's from San Diego and has a 50's Chevy pickup (somebody mentioned to give him a sympathy card, Lloyd or Harry?), and about two years ago he got a 1957 Chevy with hydraulics, drop frame, and loves our website and hasn't missed a car show since.

New Members

Bob Mitchell first time attendance new member told us that he has a "98" Corvette on the rack at present, and told us he a story about how he became a Cruzer. He'd been told to come to Flowers in the mornings and meet a lot of old men who would help him. He went one morning and "didn't see any old men", but put him onto Dave Overton of Majestic Glass, he came to the meeting to join up and only had about twenty six bucks with him. He had to make the decision to pay the dues of $25 or get a beer. Members encouraged the BEER, but he chose to pay dues, so that meant he wouldn't be taking the 50/50 money tonight.

Carol Fredrickson was encouraged and decided to join even though she doesn't have a car, but able to finagle half of Baxley's and half someone else's car (time share) situation.

Brian Thompson was also introduced but we met him last month when he came and joined.

Memberships

Virginia Teker updated the membership roster and had printed copies at the meeting who wanted a copy. She encouraged downloading the roster from an email to be sent. Want to know who has what kind of car? Virginia has compiled a list from the forms distributed/rec'd earlier. She made copies for everyone. If you haven't gotten one yet call her at 360-675-8375.

New membership packets were handed out to those present.

Car Fines

PAY UP! Our ballot box is the place for car fines to be paid. There shouldn't have been hardly any money collected because it was such a beautiful evening, but noticeably there were a few entries. It will be noted in the treasurer's report next month.

Cruz Committee

Mel Rogers mentioned that the only cruise is the North Cascade Cruise in September. He did not give an update at this time. Here is the info stated as in the June newsletter.

North Cascade Cruise, September 19-21 – The cruise will start Friday, from Hwy 20 and stay at the Midtowner Motel in Chelan for 2 nights. Twenty-five rooms have been reserved; room rates are $75(1 bed) and $85 (2 beds). We will have a Fiesta dinner on Friday, Sept 19, so bring your favorite Mexican dish and appropriate dress for South of the Border. Saturday activities are open for suggestions. More details to follow as cruise date approaches. DON'T LIKE MOTEL'N? How about bringing your RV and camping at the City Park in Chelan. You can still join in on the activities. The campground should be fairly empty this time of the year. Contact Mel or Deanna Rogers at 360-678-7727 or 360-632-5791 with any questions, confirm info and/or sign up. You may also email them at meldeanna@comcast.net.

Historian

Harry Abbott passed the History book to new members to look at. He didn't care for the idea of removing the members who had passed on so he told us to stop passing on. That idea in mind, you know there are a few businesses that give discount to Cruzers, so he took it upon himself and got a few additional discounts to deal with personal aspects such as dentures, pharmacy for male things, botox, heart attacks, girl parts, colon and rectal malfunctions. Thank you Harry for thinking of us and helping us stay around a little longer.

Sunshine Committee

Darlene sent out Sympathy cards to Carol Fredrickson, Ray Oban's Family and recently to Joyce Berger and Family for their loss of Neil Berger to cancer. A get well card was sent to Fred Benninghoff.

Sully thanked Linda and Jim Haddon for the tremendous job they did at Ray Oban's Memorial. He read a card from Carol Fredrickson, thanking everyone for all the food provided at the memorial, Ray would have been touched, plus thanks to the Sunday morning breakfast group at Island Café for their love and support.

PAST HAPPENING'S IN REVIEW

Sully asked for a brief summary of past car show and happening events, they are as follows:

1. Frontier Ford – 13 cars showed, got some freebees, and a thank you.

2. Commissary Car Show – Cancelled, 2 Chevy guys showed who didn't get the word.

3. Parts Plus Show N Shine – 21 cars showed, some that were signed up to come and some showed that didn't sign plus a few non members. Dan said it was a success. They were fed hotdogs, etc. He was asked if it was going to be an annual thing and he said it could be.

4. Twin City Idler's Car Show – Harry reported that it was a large show of 525 cars. Ray Southard, Bill Waite plus others took home trophies. Nice trophies. We missed winning the club participation award by one car.

5. Freeland Parade – Good time, said there were more cars than on lookers. The Chamber of Commerce sent a nice thank you for participating and looking forward to next year.

6. Greenbank Farms – About 20 cars went down and about 50 Cruzers were there either with or without cars. Trophies were picked by Harry Abbott, Jim Croft, Larry Smith, Suzi Souza, Bob Cairns, plus more for a total of 15 or 16 won by Cruzers.

If there were more shows it is possible I didn't hear it and/or the recorder was hard to determine due to background. SORRY!!

Car Show Committee

Pat mentioned that he was getting more requests to do small car shows at retirement homes outside of Oak Harbor, such as Mt. Vernon, Sedro Woolley and Everett; he will get them on the clipboard for signup. The current one is July 18, 1-5 p.m. in Mt Vernon. Response wasn't receptive. Call him for more info. 360-678-8758.

Port Townsend Car Show, August 16 – The club rec'd
a letter inviting our club participation. There will be lots of trophies for lots of categories, BBQ, raffles, T-shirts, shopping downtown, etc. The proceeds go to supporting the kids of Port Townsend. They are requesting a response to get an idea of how many to expect. This involves ferry reservations for us 30 days in advance. A sign up sheet will be going around requesting info req'd for the reservation. Contact Pat Covello for update.

OLD BUSINESS: NONE

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Christmas Party, Saturday, CPO Club, December 20 – Mark it on your calendar. Barb has a sign up sheet for anyone to volunteer to be on the committee and help decorate.

50/50 Drawing and Door Prizes: Bucket Dude – Bruce Biddle

Bruce volunteered as Bucket Dude this month
because last month's winner, Matt McMillan did not show until the start of the meeting. Thanks Bruce.

50/50 Winner: Barb Mann? or Ted $108.50. This was funny, Ted Mann (V.P.) was holding the prize money when the ticket was drawn, Barbara had the ticket stub and she came up to claim the money, Ted gave it to her, all but maybe the $ .50. She stuck the wad of bills down the front of her blouse (you know where). I wonder what happened at home, ask them!

Door prizes again were much of the same type items as last month, T-shirts, pocket knives, Sally's Garden gift certificates, cookbook, die cast models, and a magnetic game. Winners were Darlene Hammond, Brian Thompson (twice), Lloyd Williams, John Kingsbury, Suzi Souza, Larry Smith, Barb Mann, Brice DeVos, and Duane Dillard.

Next Meeting:

Our meeting next month is outdoors on August 5, 2008 at Oak Harbor City Beach (Windjammer Park), west side near the Gazebo. This is in conjunction with National Night Out. Food vendors will be on hand. We will have a dessert potluck only. We will also have a Cruzer car show on the grass. Cars can be in place anytime after 1:00 p.m. and be displayed until the close of our meeting. Meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Bring your chairs, drinks, etc. POC is Jim Croft at 360-675-4146

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

Neil Berger passed away Friday 27, 2008 after a hard and valiant fight with cancer. He will be missed. A service is to be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Thursday July 3, 2008. The Cruzers were invited and asked to contribute to the reception by bringing salads and desserts to compliment the sandwich fixings. Sully encouraged Cruzers to drive their rides and wear Whidbey Cruzer jackets, etc. He asked for a show of hands, about 22 cars will be parking together, possibly behind the church. Joyce Berger's address is 756 La Palabra St., Coupeville, WA 98239 for those who wish to express their help and support.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE – Bob Cairns wanted to speak on behalf of the Chevy division of General Motors in support of their vehicles, he just completed a 3100 mile marathon trip to Bryce, Zion, and Grand Canyon National parks with no problems whatsoever in his '56' Chev, god did it burned gas, about 15 miles to the gallon and spent about $1000 for gas. At temperatures of 101 and 106 he had all the windows down, it was great!!! So, as a result he does not want to hear us complain about a long cruise to Anacortes!!!

Bruce Biddle announced that there is a '49' Chevy in the Elks parking lot and he Jim Haddon are liquidating the assets for the owner. They will be pulling the items out and taking an inventory. When they get the parts ready for sale an email will be sent to the Cruzers with a description, sale price and/or best offer. You will be kept informed, but if more info needed contact Bruce at 360-675-6970.

FROM YOUR SECRETARY

It is my main goal in regards to the newsletter, to complete it, mail it, and be on the website by or before the 15th of the month. I would like to receive committee reports via email trfj1@urraca.whidbey.net or on paper at the monthly meetings or by the Friday following the monthly meeting.

If you have any concerns, questions or need something corrected, please don't hesitate to call me. 360-679-7936. Thanks.

FROM THE BACK SEAT, 1 July

It was another fantastic meeting with 80 plus in attendance. The social and potluck was wonderful as usual and was very tasty. Thanks to all of you who contributed.

This was a sad month for the Cruzers as we say farewell to two really neat men. Ray Oban and Neil Berger. They were both frequent attendees at the Flowers Day Care and coffee club. Both contributed humor, an occasional tray of "fat pills" and information to the morning gatherings. We all are better people for having known them and they will be greatly missed. Cruze on guys!

The month of July will be a busy one. Keep an eye on the calendar and make sure your pals know what, when and where things are happening. The Rendezvous looks to be a fun time and a great time to share our club with others.

Our August meeting will be held 5 August at Oak Harbor City Beach Park. This date coincides with the Family Night Out. There are usually a good variety of food vendors there so you can catch dinner there or just enjoy dessert in the park. Remember to bring a dessert to share with your fellow cruzers. Cars can be parked in the park. Remember to bring a chair.

Have a great month and I'm looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming gatherings. Get out there and have FUN !!! Until then "Cruze till ya bruise" Sully
