Cruz Committee

Dan Terrill mentioned he is taking a trip to the Coast, Long Beach, to dig razor clams November 14 – 16, camping, and welcomed anyone who wanted to come along. Call Dan at 360-675-1334 if interested.

Mel Rogers told us The Big Fat Fish Co.
cruise on October 19 was a success, the Chuckanut Drive was beautiful and the restaurant had tables set up at which about 30 people sat. No knew cruises to report.

Historian

Harry Abbott officially turned over the Historian Book to Ray Payeur for 2009. I think Ray said something about sitting on it to make sure he didn't forget it. Harry also told us of another special day today and thought it would never come, it was "National Peanut Butter Lover's Day. He says it's time to bring the smoothie's and crunchie's together and have one happy country after this. According to latest polls the smoothies are ahead and that's because there were too many nuts in the country. See what else Harry had to say, so read on!!!

Sunshine Committee

Judy Biddle will be taking over for Darlene Hammond as Sunshine Chair for 2009. But first Judy tried to explain about Harry's pig costume incident, about how she liked the costume and I think she got a little flustered; she ended up asking Harry why she just got the bottoms!!!

Judy reported she sent cards to George Reeves who had Congestive Heart Failure a few weeks ago and someone about a toe problem (sorry I didn't get the name or kind of problem.)

Judy encouraged everyone to help her. She asked that when you are told about a concern, ailment, etc. to a Cruzer or their family please ask them or do a little research about whether or not they want their situation passed on to the membership or if we should respect their privacy and leave them alone until they are ready to share. All I can say there was a lot of pink jokes and innuendoes floating in the air.

Message from the Stones…..

If you were not at the meeting last night, Chuck had an episode, his blood pressure dropped very low and he nearly passed out. He could not walk to the car he was so weak we called 911 and took him to emergency. They did tests, stabilized him and sent him home about midnight. Sully and Rollin stayed there with us the whole time…..bless them!

Back from the office on Wednesday the news is very good!!!!

Chuck's heart rate is back to normal, the doctor thinks the Rx Flomax caused the whole problem. He changed some of his Rx…blood pressure meds and a couple others, with his past history of heart problems before, I was really scared!!!

Thanks to every one of you there… you were all wonderful and we both "felt the love" from everyone. What a great group of people you all are. I appreciate it so much but Chuck REALLY did, he didn't even feel embarrassed which is saying something for him; he is just so comfortable with all of you!!!!!

The doctor says to go and take our planned trip to Hawaii in two weeks, he thinks we both could use the time in the sun and relaxing.

Love Carol and Chuck

Social Committee

Lyla gave us her last report, Vicki Sullivan will take over in January. She read off a few functions coming up such as the Thanksgiving Day Meal at the Elks, and our Christmas party, see details in other areas of this newsletter.

THANKSGIVING REMINDER

Member Jack Stiltz reminded us to volunteer again this year to work on Thanksgiving Day to help setup, feed, and deliver meals from/at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge. Jack said that because of hard economic times he expects to feed at least 5,000 this year. He also said he had 200 turkeys ordered and picking them Friday. If you wish to volunteer please come to the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge on Thanksgiving and you will be put to work. He said to arrive by 10 a.m. If you have any questions call Jack at 360-679-3816.

Trick or Treat Trunk and Potluck, October 31, 3:00 pm. – Harry mentioned that at the "Trick a Trunk" there was a guy next to him who was so scary that he had to disguise himself as Jim Croft. There was blood and gore, and the kids were so afraid to come near, so he finally had to put his pants on! He also mentioned there was a lady all by herself who came up to Harry and said "She wanted to get in his pants" so he brought his pink pig costume pants and gave them to Judy Biddle. Judy was speechless at the time (everyone laughing) but tries to explain, read on!!!

Anyone thinking about a social event or may want to set up one ask Lyla and she will advise you how to do this and what to consider. 360-675-2925. Remember, Vicki Sullivan will be the POC starting January 2009.

FROM YOUR SECRETARY

I just want to say thank you for putting your trust in me as your secretary this year and will continue to serve in 2009. This is a good and caring club to be a member of. I want to wish everyone peace and joy in the upcoming holiday season.

FROM THE BACK SEAT

This is the last edition of the back seat. It has been a fun and a very busy year. I look back and wonder where the time has gone. That means people have enjoyed the things we have done as a club. The first "Rendezvous" was a great success and from what I have heard everyone is looking forward to next years event. Family night out was great with the nice warm august weather and great participation. And of course there have been a number of Cruzes and social outings to reminisce about. Two big items are on the horizon…Thanksgiving dinner at the Elks and the Christmas party at the Chiefs Club.

I am looking forward to getting through this winter by finishing Vicki's Camaro and detailing the Hiboy. If the beginning of November is any indication of what the next few months will be like I will have plenty of shop days to get projects done. Before you know it we will be out there cruising again.

I want to thank Ted, Joan and Virginia for their support and work they did for me and for the club. I want to also congratulate the incoming officers. I thank those that volunteered to run for an office and to those that volunteered to work as a chair person for next year. I know they will do a fine job for the membership in 2009.

I ask that members take the time to get to know other members. I know people get comfortable with a group but make an effort to get to know other Cruzers. Everyone in this club has something to offer whether it be technical information, good humor or life experiences about cars and how much fun we have driving them or just plain working on them

.

I want us to take a few moments to remember those Cruzers that we lost this year. Ray, Neil, and Randi will truly be missed. Our prayers and thoughts are with them and their families. We have had illness and recoveries throughout this past year and I hope that everyone takes care of and treats themselves well in the coming year.

I look forward to becoming a participating member again in 09. I wish everyone a wonderful fun filled holiday season and a great New Year. See ya on the road or at a social and remember be safe….. "cruze till ya bruise". Sully

SPOOKS
by Sandra Liatsos

There's a goblin at my window,

A monster by my door;

The pumpkin at my table

Keeps on smiling more and more.

There's a ghost who haunts my bedroom,

A witch whose face is green.

They use to be my family,

Till they dressed for Halloween.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Historian

Harry brought out the history book and gave it to our new member Rich Voit. Then in keeping with the time of season he had a couple of political gifts for Bill Morrow, a picture of Bill with Barack Obama, a hat with a stuff animal on top also mentioning Barack Obama. I guess Bill and Harry have friendly political chats, ask Bill or Harry for the story. Last but not least he gave Mike Slack a trophy for cleanest carpet and a used guitar. He strummed a few chords for us to show that he can play!! Mike and Kathy are moving this week, Thursday the 9th to California.

Sunshine Committee

Darlene and Ed Hammond were not in attendance to give the report. We received an update on Bob Cairns who wasn't feeling well on the Cascade Loop Cruise and transported to hospital in September. He ended up having his Gall Bladder removed and is doing well. His new address is 71 Pine St. #106, Edmonds, WA 98920.

It's a great time for all. Chuck and Gail Jaeger will host a potluck for those who participated after all the candy is gone at their Garage on Case Rd. Shop Talk – September 2008

President Don (Sully) Sullivan called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order 7:06 p.m. at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge, September 2, 2008. There were 47 in attendance. Previous minutes were approved as published in newsletter.

Guests

Long time member Don Berg introduced his guest John Bradshaw who is thinking about joining. Sully asked him to tell us about himself, what classics he owns. I think that was a mistake, he started by saying he currently has a 66 Chevelle Convertible, a Chevy Camaro SS, several mustangs and others to which he was asked where he stores them? He lives in Anacortes and is a maintenance man by trade and has worked on cars most of his life. We hope to see you again, John.

Car Fines

September brought sunny weather and many of our beautiful classics out, but, as always, there are a few that still drive there daily cars. The August meeting no fines were collected, this meeting brought a few bucks.

Membership

Virginia mentioned that a couple of applications were received but they still needed to be reviewed by the Board for approval, so it was tabled. When asked she reported that there were approximately 160 members.

Cruz Committee

September 19-21 - Mel Rogers got up and mentioned the Chelan Loop
Cruise was upon us and said there was still room to go. This cruise has a Mexican Theme. The caravan of Cruzers will leave from Flowers at 8:00 am Friday the 19th of September. A question was asked about dancing, Mel said to ask Deanna!! He said he would be talking to those going by phone. Contact Mel or Deanna for info, last minute questions, or a desire to join the cruise, should be real fun! 360-678-7727. Dan Terrill had no input.

Historian

Harry brought the history book for those look at. He stated he had some Rendezvous tickets left over and offered them to the membership as souvenirs of our first. He was a little concerned about not being able to sleep, Sleeping Pills? Let him tell you the story, because your secretary didn't get it. He then talked about the names in our club and how many names are the same, such as Judy! He went back into our history and found there were 6 Judy's, 7 Mary's, and 8 Jimmy's! Harry, thank you for such insightful trivia! Keep'm coming.

Sunshine Committee

Darlene and Ed Hammond were not in attendance to give the report. The membership informed us that Pam Taylor was back in the hospital, Judy Biddle had an operation for a Hiatal Hernia, doing well; inquire with Bruce or Judy herself! Someone said that Bud Ackley has a herniated disk that will need an operation, but don't know where or when at this time. It was also mentioned that Don Sousa has some kind of flu. If you would like to know more ask those involved.

Social Committee

Lyla mentioned past happenings and a Bluegrass Festival on September the 13th. Call her if interested.

Fairhaven Shopping Trip, September 23 – Carpool to Fairhaven for lunch at "Big Fat Fish Co." and
shop. Please sign up with Lyla or Suzi Souza so Suzi can give a count for lunch. I don't know where they will be leaving from (probably Flowers), ask Lyla or Suzi. An email will probably be sent out!

Got anything social or otherwise for October, call her!!!

Contact Lyla also and she will make sure you get on the list for any of the above events. Anyone thinking about a social event or may want to set up one ask Lyla and she will advise you how to do this and what to consider. 360-675-2925.

PAST HAPPENING'S IN REVIEW

Jack's Park Picnic, Aug 10 - Carol and Chuck Stone sent the following report: Twenty five people had a wonderful time…we expected a lot more Cruzers, but we think the Pig Roast on Fidelgo kinda took some of them away from us.. We had horseshoe and mini golf tournaments, lots of delicious food showed up, and for the potluck we had 3 barbeques going strong. Big winners were Doyle Lewis and Bob Cairns in the horseshoe event, and Chuck Stone and Rollin Whited were runners up. The golf was won by Judy Whited with a great 24 and runners up were Carol Stone and Norma Lounsberry, both with 25! We parked all the classics in the park area and it was a great photo opportunity. The weather was perfect and our hosts Jack and Norma Lounsberry had the park looking more beautiful than ever. Thank you to both of them. Thank you Carol and Chuck for this report!!

Other Activities mentioned:

Pig Roast on Fidalgo Street – Great tasting pig.

Friday Creek Campout – Soggy, but great, Alma stole enough wood to keep everyone warm, 19 rigs showed, which left only 4 spaces open.

Car Show Committee

Pat read off a list of car shows in a 100 mi radius, you can view those in the Calendar At a Glance or the Whidbey Cruzer website www.whidbeycruzers.com. There were several other car shows that he stated from flyers he has, so if interested contact Pat right away because they may be happening the weekend of the 12th of September. 360-678-8758

Upchurch's 2nd Annual Show & Shine, Friday September 12, 11-1:00 p.m. - No
entry fee, and FREE Burgers and Hot Dogs for the entrants. There may also be a tour of the facility. Meet at Flowers at 10:00 a.m. and leave at 10:15.(info put out in email). The meeting put out that cars needed to be in place at Upchurch's by 10:00 a.m. To get the correct info call Fred. All types of vehicles accepted, daily drivers, work in progress, new, old, motorcycles, etc. They would like an idea in advance of the number expected, and just by a show of hands there were about twenty. Contact Fred Benninghoff at 360-675-7499 to be added to the count.

OLD BUSINESS:

LaMay Museum Membership – As requested at a previous meeting Treasurer Virginia was asked to find out what privileges we got for the $250 membership. The previous membership was $100. It was stated that we got exactly the same as before, preferred access to events and tours, free tickets, parking, etc. A short discussion was held and Larry Smith moved that we not renew our membership based on the fact that if you worked during the open show you got free access, board and meals. The motion was seconded and with a majority vote approved to not renew.

NEW BUSINESS:

Elections of Officers – The current Board of Officers is putting together a slate of nominees for next year's officers. So far Mike Harris has agreed to run for President, Harry Abbott for Vice President and Joan Reeves for Secretary. It was mentioned at the meeting that Pat Covello is looking for someone to take over as Car Show Committee Chair and Virginia would like to have someone take over as Membership Chair. Lyla Lillis has also expressed that if someone else has the desire to take over as Social Chair talk to her.

We would like to have at least two people to run for the offices so members have an option when they vote. So, if anyone has a name or knows of a member who will run submit their names to a board member and we will add them to the slate of nominees. There is always the option of attending the October meeting and nominating someone in person. See the back of the newsletter or on the website for phone numbers.

FROM THE BACK SEAT 2 September, 2008

The saying time flies is so true. Here it is September and kids are back in school, days are getting shorter and cooler weather is around the corner. Looking back on the summer the club has been quite busy with car shows, socials, the Rendezvous, and camp outs. We do have a great time together and that is the really important part.

As I mentioned at the meeting I will not be here for the October meeting, so Ted Mann will preside. We have great people in this club and it is that time of the year that a few need to step forward and run for office. As an item of new business the October meeting will have nominations made for the following positions: President, Vice President, Treasure, Membership Chairperson, Car Show Chairperson, and Historian. There may be other positions open but this is what I have at the moment. I have talked to several people about running and I am sure there are some of you out there that would like to fill one of the open positions. It is not particularly hard work and takes but a few hours of time per month to keep the club running smoothly. It is also an opportunity to take an active role and get some things accomplished to make this a better club. Participation is part of membership so, don't be shy, contact any board member and let them know you are willing to volunteer for office. The October and November meetings are very important and I encourage everyone to attend and let your voice be heard.

There are a number of events on the calendar for September. The weather forecast is predicting sun and warm temperatures for at least the next two weeks so pick an event and have fun. I look forward to seeing you at one of them. Sully

Shop Talk – August 2008

President Don (Sully) Sullivan called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order 7:00 p.m. at the Oak Harbor Windjammer Park, August 5, 2008. There were approximately 64 in attendance. Previous minutes were approved as published in newsletter.

This was a very relaxed meeting. Sully and Joan were the only officers on board. Those that came showed off their cars and enjoyed the beautiful day and evening. There were no guests or new members introduced. We also did not have any drawings this evening but there were plenty of delicious desserts for everyone to share and have a bite. The park was celebrating the NATIONAL NIGHT OUT which emphasizes an effort to fight crime. There were lots of information booths about things to get involved in and FOOD/BEVERAGE BOOTHS for everyone's pleasure and delight (for a price).

PAST HAPPENING'S IN REVIEW

Sully asked for a brief summary of past car show and happening events, they are as follows:

Ed told us about the 4th of July Parade and our participation which was very favorably received by parade onlookers. Jim Croft had a little car trouble with his 34 Ford and a couple of dropouts.

Harry reported on the July 26, Rendezvous and asked if we wanted to do it again, we said yes with him in charge. Larry Smith's tricycle races were a success even if one or two needed repair during the ordeal. The root beer floats were a hit and the burgers were goooood! The trophies were very unique and participants really enjoyed the thought and ingenuity that went into them. I think there were about 76 – 80 cars on display. He thanked everyone for their hard work and letters went out to Flowers and the Car Depot and the Net Drive-In.

The Motor City car show in Mount Vernon was small only 9 cars showed so Herb Terrill took BEST of SHOW.

Website

Ed Hammond mentioned to everyone to check out the photos of the Rendezvous.

Car Show Committee

Pat announced a lot of car shows around the area. Check Cruzer Magazine and Good Guys list. You can also go to the Whidbey Cruzers website www.whidbeycruzers.com and look at the list that Pat has put together. Check Events Calendar at a Glance in this newsletter or call him at phone no. below.

NEW BUSINESS:

Nominations should take place in October and voting in November for a new President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Membership Chair.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

Bruce Biddle reported about the Cruzers who helped the PBY Memorial Museum Association move from the tiny gas station on Pioneer to Bldg. 12 on the Seaplane base. They spent a good 3 hours doing everything asked of them and ate a lot of doughnuts.

Lyla Lillis told us that they have the new larger speed bumps in their drive now so no one drags/hits bottom.

Tim Colantoni sent a beautiful shadow box with a certificate and U.S. flag that was flown over IRAQ in a combat mission. It was sent and is dedicated to the Whidbey Cruzers for our support of the troops. It will be displayed at Flowers Marine. Tim will be here, in Oak Harbor, at end of this month.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:DID YOU KNOW: USA TODAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2001

Volkswagen Passat W8: Volkswagen is launching a $37,000 version of its Passat sedan. It will have an 8-cylinder engine and a touch of wood and leather that comes standard. Concept D1: This sedan is expected to launch next year in Europe and 2003 in the USA. It will be priced at about $75,000.

DID THE ABOVE REALLY HAPPEN?

Another Piece of Trivia, Ford's First Vehicle: Ford's interest in internal combustion engines led him to construct a small one-cylinder gasoline model which sputtered its way to life on his kitchen table. A later version of that engine powered his Quadricycle, which was a frame fitted with four bicycle wheels, completed in June 1896. He built his Quadricycle in a brick shed behind his house. When the car was ready to run, he discovered it was too wide to go through the door of the shed. He was so excited to get his car out for a test run he took an axe and smashed the bricks out of the wall.

FROM YOUR SECRETARY

It is my main goal in regards to the newsletter, to complete it, mail it, and be on the website by or before the 15th of the month. I would like to receive committee reports via email trfj1@urraca.whidbey.net or on paper at the monthly meetings or by the Friday following the monthly meeting.

If you have any concerns, questions or need something corrected, please don't hesitate to call me. 360-679-7936. Thanks.

FROM THE BACK SEAT

Our back seat is empty this month. Sully said he was notified and leaving for another A/C flight in Florida in a couple of hours as of August 6 at 7 p.m. September's Back Seat should hopefully be full and informative.
