Talk – June 2013
Remember next meeting is July 9.
President Richard
Mack called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order at 7:00 pm on June
4, 2013 held at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge.
There were approximately 52 in attendance. Previous minutes were approved as written.
New Cars
No new vehicle in
the club except Ron Teker has a ‘MOSES STICK’ to help him get around. Hope you won’t need it for too long, Ron!
Car Fines
Even though it was
a beautiful evening several Cruzers are still driving cars other than their
classics or club vehicles. Virginia
mentioned that there was at least $8.00 collected tonight, maybe more. Let’s get those beautiful cars out and show
them off!
Guests
Tonight brought
Jerry Bacon who owns a 2002 Corvette Coupe and Gary Grise’ who has a Matchbox
1966 Corvette? Welcome gentlemen; hope
to see you again, and again, and again!

Car Cruise Committee – Bob Cairns
Bob Cairns has graciously
decided to take on the position Cruise Chairman. Monday the 3rd he did some
extensive driving looking for and finding places to cruise. He has proposed to schedule one a month that
will take about 2 to 4 hrs. each trip.
When we cruise he would like to see our classics lead and those driving
their regulars in the rear of our caravan to and from Stanwood. The first scheduled cruise is:
June 23, Sunday, Jimmy’s Restaurant, Italian Cuisine, Stanwood –
Leave
Flowers Marine at 3:30pm, cruising down and back. Contact Deanna to sign up for the cruise. She will contact Bob with the number going.

Social Committee – Deanna Rogers
Deanna indicated the
Coupeville Memorial Day Parade was a success, our Cruzers showed off and gave
the Veteran Dignitaries a wonderful ride in the parade. No specific events at this time other than
Jimmy’s Restaurant in Stanwood on June 23.
Please signup up with Deanna or Bob Cairns, thank you.
Deanna also said that on
July 27 we are invited to spend that Saturday with her and Mel at Rockport for
a fun day, potluck? Watch for emails
from Deanna for events that may happen without much notice. When you see one

Tech Adviser – Ron Teker
He told us about “Motor
Flushing” which is supposed to clean out the junk. DON”T
DO IT! It will VOID a warranty and
could damage seals, etc. No one
recommends it. No advantage to doing
it. Contact Ron if you want to discuss
this.
Contact Ron if you have any questions tech or otherwise and he
will guide you. If you think of a
project the club may be interested in let him know.
Call 360-675-8375 or rteker@comcast.net.
Webpage – Need Replacement
Historian - Scott Wernecke
Scott told us that 12
years ago from this meeting the first meeting at the Elks was held. On a funny note the Whidbey Cruzers have the
distinction of having the first same sex marriage performed by our own Brenda
Ackley. Jimmy Flowers and Don Barnum were blessed in wedded bliss.
You can get the materials
from Scott to change, delete or enter new photos of your vehicles. Just call and ask him at 360-679-1177.
Old Business
1. 2013 Whidbey Cruzer Rendezvous,
July 20, Rocky Point, 11a.m – 3p.m Committee met in May and discussed menu,
facility, games, etc. Since the last 4
or 5 years have been BBQ, this year going back to picnic style with hamburgers,
hot dogs, buns, baked beans, potato salad, pickles, chips, assort of sodas, condiments,
plates, etc. provided. Just bring your chair. No cost to the membership. Due to lack of response from other invited
clubs in the past it was decided to keep to our club alone. The day will start with a CRUISE down the
island and back to Rocky Point, led by Jimmy Flowers, leaving Flowers Marine at 9 am. Games will be available, plus a
50/50 drawing. Please contact Deanna to
sign up and tell her how many are coming.
Should be a great and relaxing day! Next
Rendezvous committee meeting is Tuesday, June 11, 6 p.m at the Pizza
Factory. If you signed up to be on the
committee please join us.
2. Christmas
Party - Party coordinator, Virginia Teker told us the party is going to be
held at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club (OHYC), December 21. The price will be the same $25. The
theme is “Let the Good Times Roll. Jim and Linda Haddon are members and will
sponsor us. The menu will be buffet
style w/beef, turkey, and salmon and you can have all three. Committee meetings will be set up pretty
soon. Mark your calendars now and come and enjoy!!!!
New Business
1. 4 of July Celebration
- We were asked to participate in the 4th
of July celebration by displaying approx. 20 cars at downtown pioneer way n
front of Angelo’s CafĂ©. We were not
asked to be in the parade because the Mustang Club was already
participating. A signup sheet was laid
out but no one signed up so President told the celebration committee that we
were not participating this year.
2. Door Prizes - Prez Mack asked if we have
any door prize candidates at home that you might want to bring in please do so.
3. Equipment Storage – Mack said he put the PA
system in the trailer at Harry’s home and the big black box if miscellaneous
stuff in the storage room off the big room at the Elk’s. It was brought up that may not be an ideal
place due to others using that space.
Mack took it under advisement.
Next Meeting – Tuesday, July 9, 2013, Oak
Harbor Elks Lodge
Come to our next meeting,
find out what’s new and old this year.
Join in the fun and sign up for events and committees. You’ll find that event planning is much
easier with more people helping. The
evening starts off with a potluck at 6 pm, bring a dish to share, plates,
utensils, favorite drink, or get a drink from the bar. The general meeting starts at 7 pm. If you have an item(s) you want to add as a
door prize, bring it. We sell tickets
for door prizes and a 50/50 money pot. SEE YOU THERE!!!!

2. Tribute to Mike Slack, by Harry Abbott - Some of you might remember Mike Slack. He was skinny, hyper, drove an orange 70’s
Corvette. The last meeting he came to, I
gave him my guitar and he played a few blues riffs. I hate to say it but he was a little weird
which is why I suspect we bonded so well.
He is the only guy who spent more time in my shed than Bruce. When I first built the motor that’s in my
Chevy, he came over and we took it out.
A few weeks later we put in another motor. Are you starting to see a pattern here? He was a genuine petrol head, gear head if
you prefer the French, and we spent time at many car shows together. We talked almost weekly until about a month
ago when he begged off saying he was tired.
My next phone calls went unanswered.
Kathy said it was liver cancer.
He went to hospital for a minor procedure and laid down on the bed, went
to sleep and never woke up. I guess no
one could ask for a more peaceful ending.
‘Mate’ is an English term for which there is no American
equivalent. Mike was “me mate”. I’ll miss him. Thank you Harry!
3. Doreen’s Recovery – While Doreen Gibson is recuperating at home Virginia Teker is
organizing a MEALS ON WHEELS effort

endeavor. If you would like to help call
