Shop Talk – February 2009

Happy Valentine's Day

President Bill Morrow called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order at 7:00 p.m. held at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge, February 3, 2009. There were 91 in attendance. Previous minutes were approved as corrected in newsletter.

Moment of Silence

Tonight we paused to remember Linda Wernecke.

Guests

Our guest for the evening was Mr. George Hagley. He came to check and see what the Whidbey Cruzers were all about. His classic is a '56' Ford.

New Classics in our Club

1. Bill Waite reported that he bought the car on EBay and drove his '70' Convertible Carmenghia (VW) back from San Diego.

2. Jerry Rolfe said he found in Vancouver and purchased a junker '56' Ford pickup for $2000. Other reports told us it was much nicer.

3. Pat Covello reported that he sold his '64' Malibu to new members Cliff Aaker and Sue Carpenter, and replaced it with a '65' GTO.

A 2009 budget is being prepared and will be presented next month.

Membership – Gail Jaeger

Gail reported 111 paid members so far for 2009. She will be working on the new membership roster after she gets back from Hawaii, she should be plenty rested!!!! She had a few new member name tags to hand out. Contact Gail for membership applications as well as Jim Rairigh. 360-675-5723 or email chuckngailjaeger@verizon.net.

Newly Revised Bylaws

New printed bylaws are available at each monthly meeting for the taking. I can also send a copy via an email or regular mail. Anyone wishing to obtain a copy please contact Joan at 360-679-7936 or 360-929-4739 cell phone. Or email me trfh1@urraca.whidbey.net.

Cruz Committee – Mel Rogers and Dan Terrill

Mel encouraged anyone to contact him about an idea for a cruise that the club could participate in.

Chelan Trip/Car Show, June 5-7 - A car show on Friday and Saturday will add some purpose and fun to our trip. There will be the usual show-n-shine, poker runs, poker walks, entertainment, and a beer and wine garden. Also, The Wally Peterson Memorial Fly-In is the same weekend; and so the possibilities of an airplane show. The Mountain View Lodge is located on the North shore of Lake Chelan 7 mi. from the downtown village of Manson. Plenty of activities close to the lodge. Rates are S100/day for King and $105 for 2 queens. A discount of 20% will be given for 16 rooms or more. As of this meeting there were 22 couples signed to go and only a couple rooms left, so contact Mel or Deanna for the 1 800 number and ask how to reserve your spot. Call Mel at 360-678-7727 or email meldeanna@comcast.net if there are any questions. Definite details of the trip agenda will be made in April as the date gets closer. There are no car show registration forms available at this time. Possible itinerary:

Friday, June 5: Travel to Chelan via North Cascades Hwy or Stevens Pass with stops along the way. Social and food at Mountain View Lodge around 5 pm. "Cruz'n Chelan Car Show" activities in evening.

Saturday, June 6: Car Show and other activities of choice. Afternoon social and group BBQ at the Lodge outdoor kitchen. Evening activities at the car show (or not?).

Sunday, June 7: Return home via North Cascades Hwy or Stevens Pass with stops along the way.

Other one day cruises were mentioned such as a Nut House Cruise and possibly a lunch or dinner cruise to LaConner but no dates as of yet to report. A "We Don't Know Where the Hell we're Goin" Cruise will be scheduled late April, but just to let you know be prepared to have money in your pocket and gas in the car, only the coordinators will know. Sounds like fun doesn't it!!!!!!

Historian – Ray Payeur

Ray was looking back on old newsletters and found the first one, it shows ITEM 1, No. 1 dated March 1997 consisted of one page, which he found interesting because now the newsletter consists of 18 pages? GREEN?

FROM YOUR SECRETARY: Hey Ray! You knew I couldn't let that comment go by with out a rebuttal!!!!! 18 pages, what newsletter were you looking at and whose computer/website? When it leaves my computer to the printers it's usually no more than 9 pages of 8 1/2 x 11. The printed newsletter is 4 pages, printed on one sheet of 11 x 14 front and back. Now if you were looking at the website that is out of my control!!!!!!! JUST PULLING

YOUR CHAIN!!!!!!!!

Ray also passed the membership history binder to the new members so they could get an idea of what to add about them and their vehicles!!!

Sunshine Committee – Ted Mann

Ted Mann gave the report, which was supposed to be given by Barb Mann for Judy Biddle. It sure seems easy to pass the hat doesn't especially when Barb and Judy opt for nicer weather? Anyway, he reported that cards were sent in January to Larry Phillips, Pam Taylor, and Harry Gibson. Harry Abbott too, is mental a case?

On February 1, Bill Morrow put out an email that Harry had some medical setbacks and was at that time at Saint Josephs Hospital in Bellingham. He had two surgeries and was just moved out of intensive care. Contact Bill if you would like an update.

Bill Morrow told was us that Joe Spiker is doing well with swimming and bike riding for exercise, enjoying the weather. Glad to see he's doing well.

If the illness or medical problem is not mentioned the reason is either it's not known or the family/person did not want it to be known. Concerned friends may ask our President or Judy Biddle for updates or how to send well wishes.

Contact Judy Biddle if you know of someone in need of a little "SUNSHINE" in their lives, at 360-675-6970 or email bjbiiddle@verizon.net.

Social Committee – Vicki Sullivan

In January Mary Jo Phillips asked to send out information about a possible group trip on the bus to see a musical in Seattle: HELLO DOLLY.

Pat and Sharon Covello wanted to arrange a group to go see Danny Vernon "Elvis Impersonator" at the Casino so an email was sent.

Carol Stone wanted and arrange an outing to "IN THE MOOD" a BIG BAND Song and Swing Review in Anacortes on February 15th. Seven couples signed up.

Bill Morrow said that ge would like to arrange a NUT HOUSE Cruise in May. Sorry that's a cruise to the Nut House. Either way it sounds bad!

Then there is the redundant Christmas/Spring Fling Cruzer Party in March which Barb Mann will address.

Alma Williams has arranged a Friday Creek Campout in May which she will tell you about.

The "New and Improved" Lake Chelan Cruise is now to be held in June instead of the traditional September hosted by Mel and Deanna Rogers which they will talk about.

There are no socials planned for any of the upcoming months so if anyone would like to feel free to jump in and make a suggestion.

I think I have finally gotten all of the bugs worked out of the email addresses on the roster so that I can forward any news you might have except for Sharon and Marty Luther (whose box is always full) and Jack and Patty Christian.

Memorial Day Campout, Friday Creek Campground, May 22-May25 – Alma Williams has reserved 17 camp spots, but must plan early before the camp reservations fill up. The cost this year is $20 per night for Thousand Trail members, $25 for non members. $20 is the fee for tent campers. Saturday the 25th is a potluck at 2 p.m. for all club members and friends whether camping or not. She has 13 spots already assigned and four left. If she needs to get more spots she can. Please notify Alma ASAP via email at almabwilliams@hotmail.com or call 360-675-3956.

If anyone would like to plan an event, have all the details, send it to Vicki in an email to send out to all the club members. She is willing to be a contact/response person for a list of those wishing to participate. 360-678-6032.

Car Show Committee – Pat Covello

Pat Covello is standing in for Matt. Still not many car shows to tell.

***See the Calendar at a Glance which lists the car shows Pat mentioned. If you have any questions or know of a show contact Matt at 360-682-6722. His email address is macnfeather@comcast.net.

**** REMINDER - Seattle and Portland Roadster Shows are cancelled due to the buyer not coming through soon enough and so a deposit was not put down on the facilities, etc.

Technical Advisor – Bruce Biddle

Bill Morrow filled us in on the welding class held January 30. The turn out was great, two sessions, total of 35 plus the four instructors. Garages used were Bruce Biddle's and Larry Smith's. Instructors were Bruce Biddle, Larry Smith, Norm McCullaugh, and Larry Brewer. Contact Bruce at 360-675-6970 questions about what the advisor does, for comments and ideas. A special reward was given to "Smitty" made in his class to thank him for is fine instruction, ask Smitty!!!!! Looking to do other classes or similar things every couple of months, Ed Barrett offered his car for a body workshop!!!!!

Smitty told us a really sad story about a friend that recently past. When he and his wife got married about 30 years ago she would charge him $20 every time they had sex. Thirty years go by and she comes home one day and he's drunk as a skunk, she asked him "what's wrong honey". He said "I lost my job, she said "Don't worry, that $20 I collected for thirty years has built up and is now $3 million, he said "Holy smokes if I'd known that I'd would've given you all my business!!!"

Talk to Bruce if you have an idea about a class or need help with something he will help you out. 360-675-6970.

VP MINUTE

THIS VP MINUTE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY DR. JOHNSON'S FISH OIL AND GINKO BILOBA TABLETS GUARANTEED TO HELP YOU REMEMBER VALENTINES DAY OR WE'LL PAY YOUR FIRST TWO ALIMONY PAYMENTS.

WHAT BROUGHT THIS SUBJECT TO MIND WAS WHEN THE OTHER DAY, I FOUND MYSELF STANDING IN THE BATHROOM WONDERING WHY I HAD COME IN. PROBABLY A PILL. CHECK THE BEDROOM. NO NAKED WOMEN. MUST NOT BE THAT PILL. SHOOT! WELL, TAKE ONE FOR NURITIS, NURALGIA, AND RING AROUND THE COLLAR JUST TO BE SAFE.

THIS GOT ME TO THINKING OF JOHN WAIHOUHO. JOHN LIVES IN SARAVASI VILLAGE ON MALETA. MALETA IS A DAY SAIL FROM GUADACANAL WHICH IF YOU WATCHED WWII JOHN WAYNE MOVIES OR PT – 109, YOU KNOW IS IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS. I FIRST MET JOHN IN '79. HE WAS THE HEAD OF ONE SMALL FAMILY AND WAS A CARVER MAINLY BECAUSE HE HAD POLIO AS A KID AND WAS IMMOBILE. WE DID SOME TRADING AND PASSED ON.

FAST FORWARD TO '96 WHEN MARY AND I DROPPED ANCHOR IN FRONT OF WHAT NOW WAS A SMALL VILLAGE. CHIEF AUGUSTINE CAME DOWN TO MEET US MAINLY BECAUSE IN THE INTERVENING 17 YEARS ONLY 3 YACHTS HAD VISITED.

WHEN I ASKED FOR MR. JOHN WAIHOUHO BY NAME, YOU COULD HAVE KNOCKED HIM OVER. HE TOOK US TO SEE JOHN AND AS I SAT THERE TELLING HIM OF OUR VISIT 17 YEARS BEFORE I MENTIONED THAT I HAD TRADED FOR A WALKING STICK. HE LOOKED AT ME, SMILED AND SAID, "YES, AND A COMB."

17 YEARS, AND WHILE HIS BODY WAS FRAIL, HIS MIND WAS STILL SHARP. PERHAPS ITS BECAUSE HE ISN'T ENCUMBERED BY FIVE SECOND SOUND BITES, COMPUTERS AND I-PODS. SO I THINK OF JOHN WHEN I'M STANDING THERE TRYING TO REMEMBER IF I HAD LUNCH OR NOT, AND I WONDER IF WE HAVEN'T LOST SOMETHING ALONG THE WAY.

AND THEN JUST TO BE SAFE, I GO CHECK THE BEDROOM FOR NAKED WOMEN…

CRUZ'N WITH THE PREZ!

Hey Cruzers.......I have a few things to share that have been rattling around this old brain of mine. Tell me, when speaking about cars; is a 20 footer less beautiful or meaningful than a 5 footer? Does spending $50,000 on a car make it better than a $10,000 car? Does your history identify the classic you drive?, a memory maybe?, a family heirloom [ the car ]. Is your car a classic or just a classic body on a new car? Do you like cars from the 30s,40s,50s,60s,70s, and so on, and are you 30,40,50,60,70, and for you my friend Chuck Stone 80?Do you drive a car or truck?, 6 or 12 volt?, muscle ,modified, or original? Do you have lots of money to spend or are you limited? Those are all the who cares things in my mind. What matters is that you care. It's your car. Enjoy it!

Spin them tires, Prez Bill
