Tech Adviser – Bruce Biddle Update (Previous Project)

In September Bruce received a letter from the PBY Memorial Foundation in answer to his many attempts in writing and talk with them about the display car the club remodeled for them as a Whidbey Cruzer Project when Bruce was Tech Advisor.
The car is a 1946 Ford donated by Vic Gabrenas.  The Cruzers did a fantastic job making the car fit the ideals of the foundation.  But, since it’s completion we (Bruce) have been trying to give them the car for their static display without success.  Although they like the car for display and want it they have told us they cannot take it under the current licensing arrangement with the Navy due to the Foundation being on government property.  Their current licenses don’t expire until expire April 30, 2014 and the Navy wants Bldg. 12 (Seaplane Base) back.  If documents aren’t in place by 30 September 2013 they will start pursuing a location off base.  So as of now Bruce still has custody of the project car.   The club has used the car as a display at a couple events, but other than that it sits in Bruce’s garage.   Bruce and the club will keep us informed if anything develops.

Contact Ron if you have any questions tech or otherwise and he will guide you.  If you think of a project the club may be interested in let him know.
Call 360-675-8375 or rteker@comcast.net.

Shop Talk – September 2013

President Richard Mack called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order at 7:00 pm on September 10, 2013 held in the small room at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge.  36 people were in attendance.  Previous minutes were approved as written.

Secretary Joan Reeves was not present, so Treasurer Virginia Teker took the meeting minutes.  Virginia reported that Joan’s mother had taken a bad fall about a week ago and had 14 stitches in her head and that Joan was busy at home caring for her mother, who was still not back to her usual self.

New Members/Guests - Ronald McDonald was announced as having been accepted as a member.  He was sponsored by Duane Dillard.  No new members or guests were present.

Car Fines
September meeting marked the end of collecting fines for the year.  $7.00 was collected plus a Canadian “Two-nie” from Harry Abbott?  Treasurer Virginia said “The two-nie, since we can’t put it in the bank account will be hoarded against potential government financial collapse (in case the Cruzers have to flee to Canada).

No new vehicles were reported.

Margie Baxley spoke on behalf of Dick Shanniak, who lives alone and is experiencing some health problems.  Margie says that her family have shown up to help clean and organize for Dick and some meals have been provided, but Dick needs more folks to show up with a casserole or kettle of soup or stew as he cannot cook for himself.  Margie sent a request for help to be distributed through Deanna’s email list, but there has not been enough response.
Please help Dick Shanniak if you can!  Contact Margie at 678-2147 or at margdawn@aol.com to help out.   Thank you, MargeA phone call will be the best way of contact.

Car Cruise Committee – Bob Cairns
Bob reported that the last cruise, this past Saturday, drew 11 cars and 27 people to Bob’s Burgers and Brews in Burlington.  On the way back, cruise leader Bob Cairns located a new restroom resource.  He vigorously denies “getting lost” and maintains that, hey, everyone got home before dark, didn’t they?
The next scheduled cruise will be Saturday, Sept. 21, to Red Robin in Burlington, with departure time from Flowers Marine set at 2:30 PM.  It is expected to include a stop at the same new restroom facility.

Bob requests that, if you want to join a cruise, you please SIGN UP by contacting him, rather than just showing up.  We try to give the restaurant advance notice on the head count so that they can set up appropriately, and we can’t do that if people “surprise” us.  Thanks for understanding.

Car Show Committee – Bob Cairns
Acting in his dual capacity as Cruise/Car Show Chair, Bob proceeded to give the Car Show report, which appears in its entirety at the end of these Minutes.

Bob then disclosed that he and Bobbi will be taking a road trip in October and he will not be available to perform his usual tasks and that he would like a volunteer to fill each role.  Pat Covello was pressed into service to do the car show report.  Virginia Teker proposed that the responsibility for planning an October cruise be given to Ron Teker as divine retribution for his choice to stay home from the meeting to watch a World Cup-qualifying soccer match.  Bob accepted this and assigned the action item to Ron.
Ron – “You have a gem of a wife”.  Luv Ya, Joan

Bob also reported that he would like help with either Car Show or Cruise chair responsibilities.

1. Veteran’s Day Parade – President Mack reminded us about the second annual Veterans’ Day parade on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at 2:00 PM in Oak Harbor.  So far, seven cars have signed up to participate, and we need thirteen more cars.  Gail Jaeger remarked that last year’s parade was well attended and very rewarding to experience.  Please sign up and bring your car to support our veterans!
2.  Back-to-the-Drive-In – President Mack also spoke about the “Back-to-the-       Drive-In” event on Friday, Sept. 29, 2013.  It’s being sponsored by Alaska Federal Credit Union in their parking lot between 4 and 6pm.  They offer free hot dogs and colas for those who display their cars.  The local high school band will be performing.  So far, we have only three signed up, we need fifteen.  Please sign up!

1.  Nominating Committee –  President Mack introduced the 2013 Nominating Committee, who will scrape the bottom of the barrel seeking candidates for next year’s slate of officers.  The committee includes:
Ed Hammond (who has volunteered to serve as President in 2014)
          Alma Williams

So far, the following Cruzers have volunteered for Officer positions:
          Ed Hammond – President
          Bob Cairns – Vice President
Secretary – OPEN (Joan is resigning)
Treasurer – Virginia Teker (will stay on for 2014)

2.  Halloween - Fred Benninghoff reminded everyone that Halloween (his favorite holiday) is coming up and the Cruzers plan to hold “Trick or Trunk” again this year at the Ace Hardware parking lot.  Fred believes everyone should buy at least 10 pounds of candy to distribute.  This even will be Thursday, October 31 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with staging for cars at 3:30 PM.  Fred says he has lots of stuff you can borrow to creatively enhance your car for the event, and if you need electricity for your display, there is power available through the side door for about 10 cars.
3.  Christmas Party Report – Virginia Teker
Virginia reported that the Cruzer Christmas Party, with a theme of “Let the Good Times Roll”, will be held at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.  It will begin with a no-host cocktail hour at 5:00 pm, followed by a buffet dinner around 6:00 pm.   A short business program, including installation of 2014 officers, will take place immediately after dinner, and after this we will be treated to some fun activities by a local entertainer, who will involve volunteers from the audience.  There will be prizes for the volunteers.  Finally, there will be recorded dance music until 10:00 pm or whenever the party breaks up.

Ticket price is once again, $25.00 per person. This year you will receive actual printed tickets, unlike previous years. The Yacht Club has seating capacity of 104 persons, so that is the maximum number of tickets that will be available.  Based on attendance at the last two major parties, this should not create a shortage of tickets, however in order to ensure that the Cruzers members have ample opportunity to buy tickets for their own use, tickets will be numbered and closely controlled.  Tickets will go on sale at the October 1st general meeting and will remain available until December 1st.  Each Cruzer or Cruzer couple may purchase two tickets for their own use. After December 1st, any unsold tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to purchase for your family and friends.  You may buy your tickets directly from Virginia at the October or November general meetings, or after October 1st, by mailing your check, payable to Whidbey Cruzers, to PO Box 1875, Oak Harbor, WA  98277.

Bruce Biddle asked how much the Club has to subsidize each ticket.  Virginia Teker replied that the considerable analysis which had been done on costs and ticket pricing had not been brought to the meeting, so she was unable to answer specifically, but that members should be aware that their Club is indeed subsidizing their party and that the ticket price of $25 by no means covers all of our costs.  However, due to our comfortable cash reserves, this is not a problem.

NEXT MONTH’s MEETING – OCTOBER 1, 2013, ELKS LODGE
Potluck at 6pm?  If so, bring a dish to share, plates, utensils, napkins, and your favorite drink.  General meeting will start at 7pm.  At this meeting a slate of Officer Nominees for 2014 should be presented.   At the November meeting ( last meeting of 2013) a vote will be taken.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER

1.  Harry Abbott made a presentation to Mel Rogers in retaliation for Mel’s recent public derision of “The Heretic”, Harry’s beloved pickup.  Mel had alleged that Harry’s Ford, having a Chevy engine in it, could not “perform”.  Harry presented Mel with the “Mel’s Bent Shaft” award, a proudly-mounted rectal thermometer on a pedestal.  Hee, hee!  I may be wrong but I thought Harry’s Heretic was a Chevy with a Ford engine?  Oh well!!!
2.  Special Thank You - My thanks go out to Virginia Teker for her caring and helpfulness during my ongoing commitment to care for my mother.  My sister, aunt and I are taking turns staying with Mom.  She needs 24 hr. supervision, not necessarily physical help because she can dress and do things for herself most of the time.  But there are unpredictable times when she just sits, stares, no energy, etc.  The good thing is Dr. Langrock removed the stitches and has suggested some physical therapy.  We’ll see how that goes?   Thanks again Virginia.   Thank you for taking the minutes, you would make a great Secretary!  No hint meant!

50/50 Drawing/Raffle
The 50/50 raffle featured a cash prize of $53 which was won by lottery partners Bob McConchie and Bruce Biddle.  Winners of other prizes included Carol Stone (3 prizes!) Judy Whited, Dale Turner, Bob McConchie, Marianne Rolfe, Bruce Biddle, Harry Abbott, Jim Palmer, and Don Bierce.  Instead of Disneyland, Carol is heading for Las Vegas to try out her newfound luck.

I think the Fire / Smoke/ Carbon Monoxide Detector should be the 1st. item and the Daylight Savings change, Sunday, November 3,   is a good starting date.
