President Bill Morrow called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order at 7:00 p.m. held at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge, April 7, 2009. There were 96 in attendance. Previous minutes were approved as written in newsletter.
Moment of Silence
Tonight we paused to remember Neil Berger.
Car Fines
GUESS WHAT! It's Spring! It's time to bring out those beautiful classics out of storage and show them off! April starts the fines off with a bang, if you didn't drive it, pay up! Fine is $1.00. This novelty usually lasts through September, but you never know what might happen!
Guests
Guests who attended our meeting this evening were Fred Bronson and his wife, their classic is a 62 Porsche. Steve Ellis (long time friend of the Cruzers) decided to join the meeting, and when asked to name his classics his list was long, just to name a few, 59 and 62 Corvettes, 67 Camaro, and a 67 Chevelle. Gary WHO? (I didn't catch the last name), and according to him he has a 78 Jeep CJ5, a piece of junk! WELCOME, WELCOME! Hope to see you again!!!
There was also someone named George but I couldn't anything about him, but I did hear some cars mentioned but the only thing I caught was the mention of a Mach I? Glad you all came and come again!!!
New Members
Ed Hammond introduced a new member and his wife Rob and Dawn VanDyk who live on Ducken Rd. They have 2 69 Plymouth Barracuda's, and a 53 Dodge Truck. Glad to see a few more Mopars in our midst, something other than Ford and Chevy's.
New Classics in our Club
Scott Wernecke said he bought a 99 Red Corvette Hardtop, Bob Cairns got a 61 Chevy Impala last November, and Lloyd Williams got a 2000
Mustang GT.

Membership – Gail Jaeger
Gail reported that as of tonight there are 150 active members and two life members. Gail gathered email inputs and calls received about personal info for the new roster. She asked Ed Hammond to help and they went and saw Jack Stiltz at Bay Printing. The roster will be a small booklet with member's names, addresses, email, phone no., birthdays, cars, and photo of cars I think. She had a couple sample booklets made up and asked everyone to check it and see if info is correct. Anyone who pays dues late will probably have to be put in the notes area of the roster booklet.
Contact Gail at 360-675-5723 or email chuckngailjaeger@verizon.net.
Cruz Committee – Mel Rogers and Dan Terrill
Mel Rogers put out the following by email:
Here's an update on the June 5-7 Chelan Cruise:
- LODGING: We have completely booked the Mountain View Lodge with two additional couples waiting for any cancellations. We have 26 of the 32 rooms at the lodge, 800-967-8105, http://www.mountainviewlakechelan.com/?gclid=CM252aPL_5cCFQ6jagodwTRJtg
- ROOM CANCELLATIONS: Please, please let me know if you need to cancel your room reservation. I will coordinate with the Mountain View Lodge to make sure your canceled reservation is filled with the next Cruzer waiting for a room. The problem with just cancelling the room is that the lodge has on-line registration which means that the room could be filled with an non-Cruzer. Remember that you must cancel more than 7 days in advance of your reservation in order to get a full refund.
- ADDITIONAL LODGING: Mountain View Lodge manages Condo rentals at Wapato Point. They have four 3-bedroom suites to accommodate 6-8 persons available if you're interested. Also, the Wapato Point Village Inn is within a couple of blocks of the lodge with rooms available at this time.
- CAR SHOW: The Chelan Chamber of Commerce now has registration forms and information on their Web site: http://www.lakechelan.com/582.html Additional registration forms are available at our club meetings. I have arranged for a special parking area at the car show so all the Whidbey Cruzers can be together.
- ITINERARY: Nothing has been finalized at this time, but we will plan activities around the CruzIn weekend in Chelan for those who want to participate. It will work out better for the Cruzers if we have our social gathering on Saturday evening after the car show. Friday evening is a Cruise downtown Chelan with music and other activities. A detailed cruise-itinerary will follow for those making the trip. The Dan Terrill's and Sullivan's are helping me plan the cruise.
- ENTERTAINMENT: Rumor has it that Elvis (Danny Vernon) will be performing on Saturday evening, June 6, at the Eagles Lodge. Call 509 682-2021 for information and tickets. Brenda Ackley called and said the Saturday night performance was sold out, but will have an additional performance that Friday night, so call the above number for tickets.
Please give me a call or drop an e-mail if you have any questions or suggestions about the cruise. I'm getting really excited. It's gonna be fun! Contact info on back of newsletter.
Dan Terrill reported that Steve Ellis knows of a gentleman that has a Salt Flat car, streamliner, and 2 hemi engines in it, has offered to give us a garage tour of his facility on a Saturday and limit the tour to 25 or 30 people. Please notify Dan ASAP if you are interested, if a lot of interest a possibility of more than one tour. It's a large car and impressive!!!
Bill said the first annual "Where in the Hell We Goin" Cruise will be May 2, leave Flowers Marine about 10:00 a.m. Have some money with you for lunch, gas, etc. Contact Bill Morrow or Mel Rogers to sign up.
Mel mentioned organizing an XXX Issaquah Cruise, but nothing definite. Let him know if your interested in a XXX Cruise. Contact Mel or Deanna if you have any ideas, at 360-678-7727 or want to organize a cruise.
Historian - Ray Payeur
Ray had no report other than passing the history picture book to new members. Contact Ray at 360-675-2193 for ideas and supplies needed to make your entry.
Sunshine Committee – Judy Biddle
This month Judy reported that three greeting cards were sent to lovely Cruzer women. They were Brenda Ackley for some very important tests, Marcia Rouse for an operation, and Darlene Hammond had a bought with bronchitis. Judy also encouraged everyone to do their best to stay healthy and reminded us to make sure we wash our hands a lot and enjoy the sunshine!
Contact Judy Biddle if you know of someone in need of a little "SUNSHINE" in their lives, at 360-675-6970 or email
bjbiddle@verizon.net.
Website – Ed Hammond
Ed brought in some old snapshots of Cruzers and their cars to take home. Thank you, Ed. Photos on the Webpage will be provided through a free service "Web shots" for the first 1000 pictures. Ed will be providing the shows as events occur.

Car Show Committee – Matt McMillan
Matt reported that flyers for car shows are coming in faster and more at each car show he attends. For the April car shows or events he stated that there are several Cruzers attending and will probably caravan together, so contact Matt for dates, time and place leaving from if you wish. He will make sure the website calendar gets updated with new car shows and contact info, etc.
***See the Calendar at a Glance which lists the car shows Matt mentioned plus others. If you have any questions or know of a show contact Matt at 360-682-6722. His email address is macnfeather@comcast.net.
Technical Advisor – Bruce Biddle
Bruce said his tech guy, I think he means Dan Terrill, has not gotten his stuff together, so waiting for the next class to be scheduled. He also had a couple calls about TOOLS, so before you go out to buy a specialty tool at Shucks or Napa check with Bruce. There are a lot of Cruzers who have abundance of various tools who may be willing to lend them out on a return basis, and on that note please email Bruce a list of tools that you will make available to others, that way there is a resource for those in need. One of the members asked about who was a specialist in Air Conditioning, Bruce and the members popped up and said Tim Oest, his phone number is 360-675-7929 and email is tseomrj52@aol.com for those inquiring.
If anyone has an urgent need or other suggestions for instruction please talk to Bruce. 360-675-6970.

VP MINUTE
THE DUMBIST THING I EVER DID
COCOS ISLAND IS A DOT ON THE CHART ABOUT 300 MILES OFF OF COSTRA RICA. IT'S SHROUDED WITH MYSTERY (THERE ARE STORYS OF HIDDEN TREASURE) AND CLOUD (IT RAINS 25 FEET A YEAR). IT'S A NATURE PRESERVE WITH TWO LONELY GUARDSMEN STATIONED THERE FOR 6 MONTHS AT A TIME. IT IS BEST NOTED FOR TWO THINGS, LOBSTER AND SHARKS AND IS ONE OF THE PRIMERE DIVE SPOTS IN THE WORLD WITH VISIBILITY EXCEEDING 100 FEET.
I WAS THERE A FEW DAYS WHEN THE CHARTER DIVE BOAT OUT OF PUNTARENES CAME IN, SMALL BOAT, MAYBE A DOZEN DIVERS. I MADE A DEAL WITH THE CAPT TO GO WITH THE GROUP AND GET MY TANK REFILLED IN EXCHANGE FOR A COUPLE OF 4' WAHOO'S. OFF WE GO TO A SMALL PINICAL OF ROCK MAYBE A 1/4 MILE FROM THE ANCHORAGE. THEY'RE INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY. ME, I'M LOOKING FOR FOOD. AFTER A FEW MINUTES I RUN INTO A GROUP OF DIVERS AND I TAP MY ARM INDICATING I WANT TO KNOW THE DEPTH. I LOOK AT THE DEPTH GAUGE. 30 FEET. DOWN I GO. I COME TO A THERMO CLINE. MY LOBSTER FOCASED BRAIN SAYS, I'LL BET THERE ARE LOBSTERS JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE. I SWIM THROUGH MAYBE TEN FEET OF MURKY WATER AND INTO WHAT WAS THE LARGEST GATHERING OF HAMMERHEADS I COULD IMAGINE. IT WASN'T A SCHOOL. IT WAS A UNIVERSITY. THERE WERE HUNDREDS. A TEN FOOTER GLIDED BY A COUPLE OF FEET AWAY LOOKING AT ME OUT OF ONE EVIL EYE. I COULD HEAR HIM SAY, "HEY, WHO CALLED FOR TAKEOUT?"
NEEDLESS TO SAY I TURNED AROUND TRYING HARD NOT TO PEE MY PANTS WHICH IN SHARK SPEAK IS, CHOW'S ON. BY NOW MY POOR PEA SIZED COMPRESSED BRAIN IS SAYING, THESE DIVERS ARE EUROPEAN, THAT WASN'T 30 FEET, IT WAS 30 METERS, A HUNDRED FEET AND I NOW REMEMBER THESE GUYS TELLING A STORY OF RUNNING INTO HAMMERHEADS AT 140 FEET THE DAY BEFORE.
NOW YOU MIGHT THINK THAT RUNNING INTO A COUPLE OF HUNDRED HAMMERHEADS AT 140 FEET IS THE WORSE THING THAT COULD HAPPEN TO A DIVER. NO, THE WORSE THING IS TO STILL BE AT 120 FEET AND TAKE A BREATH…..AND FIND YOU'RE OUT OF AIR.
THREE THINGS SAVED MY LIFE THAT DAY. ONE, THE SHARKS. WITHOUT THEM, I MIGHT HAVE JUST KEPT GOING INTO NITROGEN NARCOSIS, RAPTURE OF THE DEEP. TWO, I HAD AN ALUMINUM 50, A SMALL TANK GOOD FOR ONLY 15 MIN AT THAT DEPTH AND THREE, MY DIVE INSTRUCTOR, WHO ONCE TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE THE AIR IN YOUR TANK WILL EXPAND AS YOU ASSEND YOU CAN MAKE IT UP FROM A HUNDRED FEET. JUST DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH AND DON'T COME UP FASTER THAN A BUBBLE.
SO I FOUND A PARTICULARLY BEAUTIFUL BUBBLE, POSITIONED IT RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY MASK AND ROMANCED IT ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP. FOR YOUR INTEREST, A SMALL BUBBLE OF AIR TRAVELS AT ABOUT 20cm/ SEC. THAT TRANSLATES INTO 3 MINUTES OF SWEAT. WHEN I FINALLY HIT THE SURFACE, I WAS SPITTING UP BLOOD, POSIBLE AIR EMBOLISM. SINCE I WAS AT LEAST 72 HOURS FROM A DECOMPRESSION STATION THERE WAS ALSO THE BENDS TO WORRY ABOUT. I HAD NIGHTMARES FOR WEEKS. BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, EVERYTHING CAME OUT ALRIGHT. I'M STILL PERFECT….AND HUMBLE.
I'VE DIVED WITH PLENTY OF SHARKS SINCE THEN ALTHOUGH NEVER AS MANY, NEVER AS BIG AND NEVER MANEATERS. THEY ARE MALIGNED. THEY ARE GRACEFUL AND BEAUTIFUL AND DESERVE RESPECT, UNLESS OF COURSE, THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING RUDE, LIKE CHEWING ON YOUR LIVER ORYOUR SPARE RIBS.
CRUZ'N WITH THE PREZ!
It's that time again everyone! If you have not got the old car out of the garage, what's up? Spring is here! I just finished a long overdue project on my car and wonder how I got along without the old 55 these past six months. Do all the necessary maintenance checks and join the mobile generation. See you on the road.
We had another great turnout this month; some 96 came to our monthly business meeting. We had a lot of fun and got a bit goofy thanks to our V.P. Harry. We try not to take ourselves too seriously but be assured we all care about doing what's right for the club and its membership and are proud to represent you all.
Kiss someone you love, laugh with a friend, remember those who are gone.
Spin Them Tires, Prez Bill
