Shop Talk – April 2008

Shop Talk – April 2008

President Don (Sully) called the general meeting of the Whidbey Cruzers to order at 7:02 p.m. at Oak Harbor Elks Lodge April 1, 2008. There were 95 in attendance. Minutes were approved as published.

Guests

Sully introduced Barbara Folks and her friend Betty. Barbara being a young 81 year old heard about us and wants to party with us. She owns a '58' and an '80' Mercedes plus a '54' Chrysler New Yorker. Sully asked the membership to overwhelm her with hellos so she wouldn't be able to remember any of the names by the end of the meeting. WELCOME! WELCOME! WELCOME! It's nice to see new blood at our meetings. I sincerely hope she joins us.

Jim Croft introduced Mark Ackerson and Kelly Brown who came to inform us about their business and what they do. "PERPETUAL BALANCE" is its name.

SEE "FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER" for contact info.

Last but not least Sully's Granddaughter Mya was visiting, so a CAUTION sign was put out to the membership to BE NICE!

Car Fines

It's that time again to pay up! April's meeting was the first month to kick off the fines. The deal is between April and September if you come to the meeting without your classy car you pay $1.00. This was a pretty good night; I saw a lot of our beautiful vehicles in the parking lot and hope to see more in the coming months.

Cruz Committee

Mel Rogers indicated he emailed a list of day and/or night cruises that he would like feedback from the membership those cruises that we are interested in. He gives about 19 different day cruises and about 13 ideas for overnight. If you have not seen this list, please contact Mel Rogers at 360-678-7727 or cell 360-632-5791.

1. April 12 – PACCAR Open House - Contact Sully 678-6032 if you want to go or Lynn Holmes 240-8924 for more info on the tour. The Cruzers will meet at Flowers Marine promptly at 10:00 a.m.

2.
MAY 1 - PACIFIC BEACH – This is the date that we have to make reservations to get the houses for a cruise in 2009 a year in advance. The club (60 people) went three years ago and had a blast on the beach sand castle building, kite flying, etc. Contact Sully to hear more about the trip and tell him you're interested.

Mel also mentioned a CAR CLUB Exchange. Our club would host another car club for a local event such as Lions Club Car Show and provide "empty nest" homes to our guests and they would reciprocate with another event in their area to help cut down on expenses. Talk to Mel about these ideas and some of your own.

Sunshine Committee

Ed Hammond gave sunshine report so everyone would hear it. Two cards were sent out to Harry Abbott who recently lost a son-in-law in IRAQ, and a get well to Bill Morrow.

Car Show Committee

Pat Covello said Chandlers Retirement Center in Anacortes is having a mini car show with a 1940's theme on April 19. They would like us to provide 11 or 12 older classic cars from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be free food, too! A sheet was past around for volunteers to sign up to show and Pat told me he has 9 cars participating.

Next Pat told us about a 1st Annual Foothills Auto Center Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show in Burlington on May 10. Free to all participants. Contact Pat Covello with any questions or info needed about the above mentioned or any others.

Old Business:

"This is not a Car Show" Rendezvous – There was no update this meeting. There will be a report next month.'

Mike Mahoney asked for people who would like to have Dave Austin from Snohomish come to Oak Harbor to pin stripe cars. At this time it is cancelled due to lack of participation, he will try again later in the year, after the summer rush. Cost estimate $200. Great artist!

Bruce Biddle have us a final report on Tim Colantoni's ceramic coated headers for his 1970 454 Oldsmobile. While preparing to go back to Iraq he wanted to take care of his headers that he had done in Seattle were peeling and coming off. Anyway, the headers were sent to Bruce, Steve at Car Depot, sent them back to Seattle to have them redone, they were double coated for nothing and our club made a motion and seconded to pick up the cost for handling/mailing them back to the Colantoni's, Brandi put one back on the car among all her other home duties. Tim was very pleased and thankful for the help. Want the full story in detail talk to Bruce Biddle next time you see him.

FROM YOUR SECRETARY

Tell me what you think about this idea, the GOOD, BAD or the UGLY of it! In the newsletter each month I would like to start a little "Membership Bio" about the people in our club. The Bio doesn't have to be long. Just tell us a little bit about yourself and or family. You who wish to share a little could send me your bio by email, mail or in person. I want to promote awareness, new friendships, network, etc. Sometimes when new members come into an established club such as ours they may not get the attention or the encouragement they may need to get involved or stay interested. We old and established members seem to keep to our same familiar surroundings and tend not to see who joins us. If you like the idea I will be the first to enter my "Bio".

Please help me meet my basic goal in regards to the newsletter, which is completing and getting the newsletter mailed and on the website by or before the 15th of the month. I would like to receive committee reports via email trfj1@urraca.whidbey.net or on paper at the monthly meetings or by the Friday following the monthly meeting.

If you have any concerns, questions or need something please don't hesitate to call me. 360-679-7936.

Thanks……..Joan
